The Hotaru is a limited-edition all-in-one turntable from Audio-Technica in which the platter floats on magnetic repulsion, and which carries its own speaker system and lighting. Production is limited to 1,000 pieces worldwide, with a price of USD 9,999 excluding VAT. The name is the Japanese word for firefly, and the turntable was displayed at Milan Design Week. Reservations ran until 30 May 2025, and deliveries were expected in October 2025.
Key specs that matter
Belt drive from a DC servo motor spins the acrylic platter at 33-1/3 and 45 RPM. The static balanced straight tonearm is made of carbon and comes fitted with a specially specified VM stereo cartridge, the AT-VM740xML with a nude microlinear diamond stylus. The integrated speaker system uses two 63.5 mm full-range drivers and two 19 mm tweeters, with a frequency response of 60 Hz to 20 kHz and sensitivity rated at 82 dB. The unit measures 430 x 430 x 235 mm and weighs about 12 kg.
Engineering and use context
The record-floating concept holds the platter aloft through magnetic repulsion, which Audio-Technica uses to suppress vibrations. Neodymium magnets create the levitation of the platter and the tonearm above the base. The chassis combines an aluminium base body with acrylic parts and rests on solid brass feet, which the maker specifies for stability and resonance control. The platter itself is lit from inside, and light diffuses through precision-cut acrylic housing. The lighting draws on a palette of 20 shades with three modes. Basic shows a fixed colour, Gradation moves smoothly between colours, and Link responds to the energy and frequency of the music being played. Power comes from a supply rated at 100 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz and 2.5 A maximum, with consumption of 70 W. The product is supplied as a special order. A translucent acrylic plinth conceals the mechanical elements.
Pairing
Because amplification and drivers are built in, the Hotaru plays records without any other components. Standard RCA line outputs let it feed an external amplifier or active speakers, and a separate subwoofer output provides a connection for a powered bass unit to extend below the lower limit of the internal drivers. The pre-mounted cartridge means no separate cartridge purchase is needed before first use.
Alternatives
Audio-Technica also makes the AT-LP3XBT, a belt-drive turntable with Bluetooth and a die-cast aluminium platter.
