The Debut PRO S Balanced is a belt-drive turntable from Austrian maker Pro-Ject Audio Systems that combines a long S-shaped tonearm with a balanced output. It comes pre-fitted with the Pick it S2 C moving magnet cartridge, and Pro-Ject presents it as a carefully matched set of components that is ready to play from the box. Pro-Ject rates the S2 C at 6 mV at 1 kHz, tracks at a recommended 3.0 g within a 2 to 5 g range, carries an elliptical 13/25 um stylus, spans 20 to 22,000 Hz, reaches 24 dB channel separation, weighs 18.5 g, has 450 mH internal inductance and prefers a 47 kOhm load with 200 to 600 pF.

Key specs that matter

Fitted here is a 10 inch S-shape made of aluminium, ending in an SME connector for exchangeable headshells, with an effective length of 254 mm, an effective mass of 8 g and an overhang of 16 mm. Three speeds, 33, 45 and 78 rpm, are chosen electronically with a toggle switch. Stated wow and flutter reads plus or minus 0.16 percent at 33 and 0.14 percent at 45, speed drift reads 0.40 and 0.50 percent and 68 dB is the quoted noise floor figure. Without its lid the chassis is 462 x 145 x 345 mm, rising to 462 x 383 x 430 mm with the dust cover open, and the weight is 7 kg net.

Engineering and use context

A belt links the platter to a synchronous motor under electronic regulation, which runs from a 15 V DC, 0.8 A supply with 4 W consumption in operation and 0 W in standby. The platter is a 300 mm aluminium die casting, anti-magnetic, with a thermoplastic elastomer ring to damp resonances and a felt mat on top. Its axle is high-precision stainless steel turning inside a bronze bushing. A precision CNC-milled bearing block carries the arm and allows full adjustment of azimuth and vertical tracking angle. The SME-type connection makes it simple to swap cartridges mounted on separate headshells, and the anti-magnetic platter avoids pulling on the magnet system of an MM pickup. Signals leave through a True Balanced mini XLR output alongside a regular RCA pair, so the deck can be wired either way.

Pairing

The balanced socket suits a phono stage built for True Balanced operation, while the RCA pair connects to any moving magnet phono section, internal or external. The wide chassis is worth checking against the shelf or rack the deck will sit on.

Alternatives

A step further in the range is the Pro-Ject Debut Reference 10, which keeps an arm of the same length but uses a one-piece carbon-aluminium tube and an acrylic platter.
