The Debut EVO 2 is a belt-drive deck from the Pro-Ject workshops, an Austrian company that has handmade its turntables in Europe since 1991. It arrives fully assembled with the Pick it MM EVO cartridge, a design developed together with Ortofon, and it is sold in high-gloss lacquer, satin colours such as Wine Red, Steel Blue and Fir Green, and real wood options including walnut.

Key specs that matter

Only 33 and 45 rpm are provided, and they are selected electronically, so the belt stays put on a pulley. Rated wow and flutter reads 0.16 percent at 33 rpm and 0.14 percent at 45 rpm, speed drift at 0.40 and 0.50 percent respectively, while noise sits 68 dB below signal. The 8.6 inch arm, made as a single carbon tube, has an effective length of 218.5 mm, an effective mass of 7 g and an overhang of 18.5 mm. The plinth measures 415 x 113 x 320 mm and the complete unit weighs 6 kg net. An external 15 V DC, 0.8 A supply powers it, drawing 4 W in use and 0 W on standby.

Engineering and use context

Underneath the mat sits a 300 mm aluminium die casting weighing 1.7 kg, damped by a TPE ring and topped with a felt mat, and it is anti-magnetic so it does not pull on the cartridge magnets. It turns on a stainless steel axle running in a bronze bushing. The drive uses an AC motor held in a suspension system, and a DC/AC generator builds a fresh sine wave for it instead of relying on mains. The tonearm pivots in a bearing block milled on CNC machines from aluminium, and anti-skating is handled by an adaptive mechanism. The cartridge uses split pole pins, a detail Pro-Ject links to a flat frequency response. It is rated at 7 mV output at 1 kHz, an elliptical stylus with 8/18 um tip radii, a recommended tracking force of 1.8 g within a 1.6 to 2 g window, 7.2 g body weight, 22 dB channel separation and a 47 kOhm load with 150 to 300 pF. RCA output sockets are built straight into the plinth, and the box includes a dust cover, a 7 inch single adapter and a gold-plated Connect it Phono E RCA lead. An optional Record Puck E clamp adds damping for the disc.

Pairing

With a moving magnet cartridge and plain RCA outputs, the EVO 2 has to feed an MM-capable phono section, whether integrated in the amplifier or supplied as a standalone unit feeding a line input. Pro-Ject also describes an upgrade path to its True Balanced Connection when a moving coil cartridge is fitted, which then calls for a phono stage with a balanced input.

Alternatives

Within the same Debut family, Pro-Ject offers the Debut PRO B, which adds 78 rpm, a carbon-aluminium arm and a balanced mini XLR output.
