The Santorin 38 is an active closed-box subwoofer from the French company Cabasse, built around a single 38 cm driver and part of the Santorin family alongside the Santorin 30-200 and Santorin 30-500. It ships in a wooden crate on a pallet, and Cabasse advises three to four people for unpacking because of its mass. The French list price is EUR 7,000, with a glossy black lacquer as the standard finish.
Key specs that matter
The driver is the 38ND46, a 15 inch unit with a honeycomb dome membrane. Its built-in amplifier is rated at 500 W RMS continuous and 1,000 W peak. Cabasse quotes a bandwidth of 17 to 170 Hz and a maximum level of 112 dB. An adjustable low-pass filter covers 30 to 200 Hz in 1 Hz steps, phase turns from 0 to 180 degrees in 1 degree steps, and the output level covers -30 dB to +6 dB in 1 dB increments. The cabinet measures 51 x 62 x 59 cm and weighs 53 kg.
Engineering and use context
The woofer fires vertically downward, radiating through 360 degrees, and Cabasse designed the 38ND46 specifically for a sealed enclosure rather than a bass reflex box, so there is no port. Four decoupling cones screw into the base to steady the enclosure on wooden floors. All parameters are reached through five keys and an LCD on the front panel or through the supplied remote, which also handles power, mute and display. A rear switch selects 115 V or 230 V mains, and maximum consumption is listed at 625 W, with Cabasse asking for a mains lead rated at 700 W or more. The driver motor radiates a magnetic field beyond the cabinet, so the manual asks for sensitive devices to be kept roughly 50 cm away. The unit is rated for use between 5 and 35 degrees Celsius.
Pairing
Three connection routes are provided. Stereo RCA low-level inputs and balanced XLR inputs accept a preamplifier or the LFE output of an AV processor, and Cabasse suggests XLR where the processor offers it. Speaker-level terminals take the outputs of a stereo amplifier, and a set of high-level outputs feeds the main loudspeakers from there. The RCA and high-level inputs can be used together. With an AV processor the manual sets the Santorin filter to its upper limit and leaves the crossover to the processor. For Cabasse satellites it lists crossover points such as 125 Hz for iO2, 80 Hz for Riga, 60 Hz for Baltic 4 and 50 Hz for Murano.
Alternatives
The Cabasse Santorin 30-500 uses a 30 cm honeycomb driver with the same amplifier power in a 43 x 38 x 47 cm, 28 kg cabinet.
