The Orion MC170 is a compact active subwoofer from Cabasse SAS, the French loudspeaker company based in Plouzané in Brittany. It is a one-way design built around a single 21 cm driver, and Cabasse lists it at EUR 649. Cabasse describes it as a unit that lets the low-frequency effects channel of a home cinema system match the dynamic range and control of the main channels. An earlier Cabasse product carried the Orion name as the Orion MT3 subwoofer.
Key specs that matter
Cabasse rates the built-in amplifier at 200 W nominal with 400 W as the peak figure. The quoted frequency response runs from 35 to 200 Hz, and the filter that sets where the subwoofer hands over to the main speakers is adjustable between 30 and 180 Hz. The driver is the Cabasse 21MT with a cone of cellulose fibre, loaded by a bass reflex enclosure. The cabinet stands 41.5 cm high, 30.5 cm wide and 43 cm deep. Finishes named across Cabasse documents include black ebony, natural oak, dark oak, walnut texture, glossy black and glossy white. There is no wireless or Bluetooth link, so the signal arrives by cable.
Engineering and use context
The main design idea is the port. Instead of a front or rear opening, the Orion has a vertical port that fires downward and radiates over 360 degrees close to floor level. Cabasse states that this layout reduces parasitic port noise, attenuates standing waves inside the cabinet and makes the unit less sensitive to how close it sits to a wall, which gives more freedom when the box has to be hidden beside furniture. The downward orientation also applies to the woofer itself, so the front baffle shows only the logo, and the enclosure sits on four short feet that leave a gap for the port output. The rear panel holds the amplifier module, labelled TSA200D MK2, with the level and filter controls, line inputs, an IEC mains socket and a power switch. The retail code for the black ebony version is ENC1707.
Pairing
Cabasse instructs owners to connect the LFE or subwoofer socket of an audio-video amplifier to one of the line inputs, left or right, and the receiver's own bass management then decides the split. With a stereo amplifier that has no subwoofer output, the adjustable filter lets the MC170 start where small speakers roll off.
Alternatives
The Cabasse Santorin 30-200 is a larger subwoofer with a 30 cm honeycomb driver, the same 360 degree down-firing vent idea and a weight of 25 kg.
