The Santorin 30-500 is an active subwoofer from Cabasse, the French loudspeaker maker based in Brittany, and is made in France. It adapts the bass technology of Cabasse's La Sphère into a compact cabinet - a 30cm honeycomb-structured dome woofer firing downward into a sealed enclosure - and pairs it with a 500W amplifier with digital control of filtering, phase and delay. It sits between the smaller Santorin 30-200 and the larger 38cm Santorin 38.
Key specs that matter
The Santorin 30-500 uses one 30cm (12-inch) 30ND40 driver with a honeycomb composite dome diaphragm, in a sealed enclosure. The amplifier delivers 500W nominal and 1,000W peak. Frequency response is 22Hz to 200Hz and maximum output is 106dB. The low-pass filter adjusts from 30Hz to 200Hz in 1Hz steps, phase from 0 to 180 degrees in 1-degree steps and delay in one-foot increments. A remote control is supplied. The cabinet measures 43 x 38 x 47cm (H x W x D) and weighs 28kg.
Engineering and use context
Rather than a conventional paper or polypropylene cone, Cabasse uses a dome-shaped diaphragm built on a honeycomb core, a sandwich structure that combines high stiffness with low mass so the whole surface moves as one piston without flexing. The driver fires vertically downward toward the floor and radiates over 360 degrees horizontally, so the subwoofer's output does not depend on which way the cabinet faces, which Cabasse says gives a more even frequency response in the room. The 30ND40 was designed specifically for a sealed cabinet without a bass-reflex port, avoiding port noise and giving a controlled, gradual roll-off below the system's resonance. A sealed enclosure also behaves more predictably near walls and corners than a ported one, since there is no port output to interact with nearby surfaces, and the rigid dome keeps its shape at the long excursions needed for deep bass. The fine filter, phase and delay settings allow precise time alignment with the main speakers, useful whenever the sub and the mains are not equidistant from the seat.
Pairing
The Santorin 30-500 integrates with Cabasse's own speakers, including its coaxial and spherical models, and with any stereo or home cinema system through its line inputs. Its output and extension suit medium to large living rooms, and the downward-firing design lets it sit against a wall or under furniture without directional constraints.
Alternatives
Cabasse's own Santorin 38 uses a larger 38cm driver in a 53kg cabinet, extending to 17Hz with 112dB maximum output.
