The RP-1000SW is the 10 inch model and the smallest of the four powered subwoofers in the Reference Premiere range from Klipsch of Indianapolis. Above it sit the RP-1200SW, RP-1400SW and RP-1600SW, which share the same driver material, amplifier topology and port design at larger scales. Klipsch covers the model with a 5-year warranty.
Key specs that matter
Frequency response is rated at 19 Hz to 131 Hz within 3 dB, and Klipsch quotes maximum acoustic output of 118.5 dB. The built-in amplifier is a Class D design with an analog preamp stage, rated at 300 W RMS continuous and 600 W peak. The driver is an Ultra Long Throw Cerametallic woofer with a spun copper finish. The cabinet is made of MDF and measures 42.3 cm high, 38.1 cm wide and 63.4 cm deep, and the unit weighs 25.7 kg. The only finish offered is ebony vinyl. Inputs are a dual RCA line-level and LFE connection plus a port for the optional WA-2 wireless kit.
Engineering and use context
Klipsch builds the cone from Cerametallic, a material it describes as very light and very stiff, which keeps cone breakup and distortion low and lets the driver reach a given level with less amplifier power. The enclosure is bass reflex, with a slot port on the front baffle; Klipsch calls it Aerofoil and says its internal flare geometry cuts turbulence noise. Because both woofer and port face forward, the sub does not need clearance from a rear wall to breathe. On the rear panel, a low-pass crossover control and a variable phase control let the owner blend the sub with the main speakers. The wired RCA input and the wireless input can be active at the same time, so one subwoofer can serve a two-channel system over cable and a home theater over the air without any switching. Standby draw is half a watt. The cabinet has rounded corners, rubber feet that absorb shock, a woven cloth grille and steel grille posts.
Pairing
The line-level and LFE jacks take the LFE feed from an AV receiver or the sub out of a stereo integrated amplifier or preamplifier. With the WA-2 kit, placement is free of cable runs, and up to four WA-2 equipped Klipsch subwoofers can be used wirelessly in one room. The copper-toned cone matches the woofers of the Klipsch Reference Premiere floorstanding, bookshelf and center speakers.
Alternatives
The Klipsch RP-1200SW is the next size up, using a 12 inch Cerametallic woofer driven by 400 W RMS and rated down to 16.5 Hz.
