The R-100SW is a powered subwoofer from the Reference series of Klipsch, the Indianapolis company founded by Paul W. Klipsch in 1946. It belongs to the 2018 generation of Reference subwoofers, where it was the 10-inch model placed under the 12-inch R-120SW in that range, and Klipsch now points buyers of this model to the newer R-101SW. The cabinet is covered in a scratch-resistant black vinyl with a textured wood grain pattern.

Key specs that matter

A single 10-inch high-excursion woofer fires forward from the front baffle. Its cone is made of spun-copper Injection Molded Graphite (IMG). An all-digital amplifier supplies 150 W continuous and 300 W peak. Klipsch rates the frequency response at 32 Hz to 120 Hz within plus or minus 3 dB and gives a maximum acoustic output of 112 dB. Air from the bass-reflex MDF box vents through a rear-facing port. It stands 368 mm tall, 318 mm wide and 417 mm deep, and weighs 10.9 kg.

Engineering and use context

Klipsch says the IMG cone is very light yet rigid, which limits cone breakup and distortion at low frequencies. The digital amplifier is described by the maker as a high-efficiency design. Controls are kept simple - a volume knob, a variable low-pass filter whose top position is 160 Hz, and a two-position 0 or 180 degree phase switch. A three-position Off, Auto and On switch sets the power behaviour. In Auto the amplifier wakes when a signal arrives and falls back to standby after 15 to 20 minutes of silence. A green indicator LED at the front glows while the amplifier is on and receiving signal. The grille is a low-profile type that Klipsch describes as acoustically open.

Pairing

The sub accepts line-level signals only, through two RCA jacks marked L/LFE and R, so it takes the sub out or LFE jack of a surround receiver or processor, or else the left and right pre-outs of a stereo preamplifier or receiver. There are no speaker-level terminals. When the receiver handles bass management, the low-pass knob should be turned fully clockwise. Otherwise Klipsch suggests a crossover of 50 Hz to 90 Hz with larger floorstanding main speakers and 90 Hz to 150 Hz with small bookshelf or satellite models. Klipsch designed the low-pass and phase controls to help the R-100SW blend with Reference speakers from its own catalogue.

Alternatives

The Klipsch R-120SW from the same 2018 Reference generation moves up to a 12-inch IMG woofer with 200 W continuous and 400 W peak amplification.
