The Q SUB80 is the entry point to the Q SUB range of powered subwoofers from Q Acoustics and the most compact of its three models, sitting below the Q SUB100 and Q SUB120. The range went on sale on 11 March 2025, with the SUB80 priced at GBP 599, EUR 749 and USD 899. The finish options are Satin Black, which uses a black grille, and Satin White, which uses a grey one.

Key specs that matter

An 8-inch (203 mm) bass unit with a paper cone, a rubber surround and a heavy-duty steel frame is driven through a 38 mm voice coil. The amplifier delivers 200 W continuous and 400 W peak, and THD at rated power is 0.09%. Frequency response is 36 Hz to 250 Hz at -6 dB, and maximum SPL is 107 dB at 1 m. Its low pass crossover is adjustable between 50 Hz and 250 Hz, a range that starts 10 Hz higher than on the two larger models of the series. Height, width and depth are 315 x 315 x 347 mm, and the weight is 15 kg.

Engineering and use context

Inductance in the voice coil can modulate the magnetic field and add distortion, so Q Acoustics fits an aluminium demodulation ring to counter it. Power comes from a module of the company's own design, built from four digital amplifier stages wired in parallel bridge-tied load, the same topology used across the whole range. The box is a closed infinite baffle design with no port. Its panels are 18 mm high-density MDF, the baffle is double thickness at 36 mm, and internal dart bracing ties the walls together. The DSP recognises whether a stereo or a mono signal is connected and adjusts gain on its own. Dual phase and delay settings allow the bass output to be brought into step with the arrival time from the front speakers. A 12 V trigger input is also fitted, so the sub can power up automatically with an amplifier or receiver that has a trigger output, and the package includes four spikes with locking nuts and covers. The steel frame, paper cone and rubber surround are common to all three drivers in the Q SUB family, which differ mainly in diameter.

Pairing

Input sensitivity at maximum gain is 300 mV rms, the maximum input level is 2.1 V rms and the input impedance is 20 kOhm. The RCA connection accepts either the stereo preamp outputs of an integrated amplifier or a mono LFE line from an AV receiver or from powered speakers that have a sub output. With its small footprint the SUB80 suits compact stereo systems built around bookshelf speakers.
