The Q SUB120 is the largest and most powerful model in Q Acoustics' Q SUB subwoofer series, which the British company introduced in 2025 alongside the Q SUB80 and Q SUB100 to complete a family that already included the slimline 3060S. It is built around a 12-inch driver in a sealed cabinet with a custom DSP amplifier module, aimed at larger rooms and at both home cinema and stereo systems.

Key specs that matter

The Q SUB120 uses a 305mm (12-inch) driver with a paper cone, rubber surround and 50mm voice coil in an infinite baffle (sealed) enclosure with an effective volume of 44.1 litres. The amplifier delivers 300W continuous and 600W peak, with THD below 0.1% up to rated power. Frequency response is 28Hz to 250Hz (-6dB), and the low-pass filter adjusts from 40Hz to 250Hz. Maximum SPL is 114dB at 1m. Input sensitivity at maximum gain is 300mV, maximum input level is 2.1V, input impedance is 20 kilohms and the noise floor is 50 microvolts. The cabinet measures 400 x 400 x 432mm and weighs 22.5kg, in Satin Black or Satin White.

Engineering and use context

The amplifier module was designed by Q Acoustics and combines DSP, amplification and power supply. It uses four digital amplifier stages in a parallel bridge-tied load (PBTL) configuration, which lowers output impedance for tighter control of the driver and spreads heat across several stages. The driver's motor includes an aluminium demodulation ring that reduces modulation distortion caused by changes in voice coil inductance as the cone moves. A sealed box was chosen instead of a port because it gives a more controlled bass roll-off, lets the DSP tune the response precisely and makes the subwoofer easier to place near walls, corners and furniture, with no port to obstruct. The cabinet is built from 18mm high-density MDF with a 36mm double-thickness front baffle, and internal dart bracing anchors the driver mechanically and limits cabinet flexing under the high internal pressure a sealed subwoofer generates.

Pairing

Line-level RCA and LFE inputs connect the Q SUB120 to a stereo amplifier's pre-out or an AV receiver's subwoofer output. The adjustable 40Hz to 250Hz low-pass filter blends it with main speakers from compact stand-mounts to floorstanders, and with AV receivers the LFE input lets the receiver's bass management take over. Its size and output suit larger living rooms and dedicated cinemas.

Alternatives

Q Acoustics' own Q SUB100 uses a smaller driver with a 38mm voice coil, reaching 32Hz, for more compact rooms.
