The Q B12 is a powered subwoofer from Q Acoustics, launched in 2020 as the first subwoofer from the British company to use a 12-inch driver. It was designed to complement the Concept and 3000i loudspeaker ranges. US list prices were USD 599 for the Carbon Black and Arctic White vinyl finishes and USD 799 for the black and white gloss versions.

Key specs that matter

The 305 mm high-excursion driver has a 50 mm voice coil, and its Class D power stage is built around the Texas Instruments TPA3255 chip. Rated output is 220 W continuous and 440 W peak. The quoted frequency range runs from 28 Hz to 300 Hz. Input sensitivity is 150 mV and input impedance is 13 kOhm. The cabinet measures 400 x 400 x 446 mm and weighs 21.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

Q Acoustics uses a sealed MDF box that it calls an infinite baffle, with no port to vent the rear of the cone. Its front baffle is about 36 mm thick, and internal dart bracing stiffens the panels around the motor system. The large voice coil was chosen to keep thermal compression to a minimum when the driver works hard for long periods. Heat from the amplifier is carried away by an aluminium heat sink. Connections sit on a recessed terminal panel that hides behind a removable magnetic rear cover, so cables stay out of sight from most angles. Controls include a level dial, a phase switch with 0 and 180 degree positions, an Auto/On selector for the power mode and a status indicator. The crossover control has an AV setting intended for complete Q Acoustics systems. The box includes the power cable and four floor spikes with locking rings and covers, and the adjustable spiked feet also take rubber caps for hard floors.

Pairing

Line-level RCA inputs are provided in left and right form and as a mono socket. An AV receiver connects its LFE output to the mono input, with the crossover left on the AV setting so the receiver handles bass management. In a two-channel setup the L/R sockets connect to the pre-out of an integrated or preamplifier, and the level dial then matches the sub to the main speakers. The manual suggests a minimum crossover setting of 50 Hz with floorstanding speakers and 100 Hz with bookshelf models. Concept and 3000i speakers are the ranges the B12 was developed alongside.

Alternatives

The Q Acoustics Q SUB120 is a newer sealed subwoofer with the same driver and voice coil sizes, rated at 300 W continuous and 600 W peak.
