The KC92 is the larger of KEF's two KC compact subwoofers, launched on 27 February 2024 together with the Kube MIE range at a US price of USD 1,999.99. It takes the force-cancelling principle of the smaller KC62 and applies it to a pair of 9-inch drivers, while keeping a cabinet only 352.5 mm tall. KEF offers it in Black Gloss and White Gloss.
Key specs that matter
Two 9-inch drivers are mounted back to back and fire out of opposite sides of a sealed cabinet. Each has its own 500 W Class D amplifier, for 1,000 W RMS in total. Frequency response is 11 Hz to 200 Hz at ±3 dB and maximum output reaches 110 dB. The low-pass filter spans 40 Hz to 140 Hz with a 24 dB per octave slope and includes an LFE position, and the phase switch offers 0 or 180 degrees. Connections are a combined RCA line/LFE input, a block for speaker-level wiring, a 12 V trigger, a USB-C port for firmware updates and an expansion slot for the KW1 wireless adapter, plus a line output with a high-pass filter. The cabinet measures 352.5 x 330 x 360.5 mm (HxWxD) with rear panel and feet, and the weight is 20 kg. Power consumption is rated at 1,000 W in use and under 0.5 W in standby from a 100 to 240 V supply.
Engineering and use context
As the two drivers move in opposite directions, their reactive forces on the cabinet cancel each other, and KEF uses this to keep cabinet vibration to a minimum at high output. Unlike the KC62, whose drivers share a single Uni-Core magnet system, the KC92 gives each driver a separate large motor with a vented voice coil. The cones are a hybrid build of a shallow concave aluminium skin bonded to a paper cone. They are suspended by the patent-pending P-Flex surround, a pleated shape derived from origami that resists the air pressure building inside a sealed box. The Music Integrity Engine DSP is tuned for this model, and its iBX Intelligent Bass Extension algorithm reads the input signal so the KC92 reaches higher levels while holding bass extension at any listening level. SmartConnect senses a single or a dual RCA connection and sets gain to suit, so a Y-splitter is not required. The low-profile heatsink follows the approach of the LS50 Wireless II.
Pairing
The high-passed line output lets the KC92 relieve a pair of main speakers of the lowest octaves when both run from one preamplifier. With KEF W2 platform wireless speakers, the sub is set to LFE and the crossover is configured through KEF Connect, and the KW1 kit or the KW2 RX receiver replaces the signal cable. The side-firing drivers need at least 77 mm of space from any wall, and the KSK92 kit stacks up to three units.
Alternatives
The KEF KC62 is the smaller force-cancelling model, with two 6.5-inch Uni-Core drivers and the same total amplifier power in an aluminium cabinet.
