The Kube 8 MIE is the smallest model in KEF's Kube MIE subwoofer range, launched in February 2024 at a US price of USD 599.99. Its 293 mm wide cube suits compact rooms and systems with little floor area to spare, and it brings the same Music Integrity Engine processing and connection set as the larger 10, 12 and 15-inch versions.

Key specs that matter

An 8-inch (200 mm) long-throw driver faces forward from a sealed enclosure, powered by a 300 W RMS Class D amplifier. KEF quotes the response as 34 Hz to 140 Hz at -6 dB, a looser tolerance than the ±3 dB used for the larger Kube models, and maximum output as 105 dB. The low-pass filter adjusts from 40 Hz to 140 Hz with a 24 dB per octave slope and has an LFE setting, and phase switches between 0 and 180 degrees. Connections comprise RCA line/LFE sockets, speaker-level terminals, a 12 V trigger and a port for the optional KW1 wireless kit. The cabinet measures 293 x 293 x 310 mm including feet and rear panel and weighs 9.4 kg. The supply accepts 100 to 240 V and consumption is listed as 300 VA. The only finish is black.

Engineering and use context

The sealed cabinet has no port, which removes port noise and gives a gentler bass roll-off, and KEF states that this allows placement against a wall, in a corner or inside a cabinet. A long-throw design gives the 8-inch cone the stroke needed to move enough air from such a small box. The MIE tuning for this model includes iBX Intelligent Bass Extension, an algorithm that reads the incoming signal and adapts processing so that the sub can play louder without giving up low-frequency extension at any volume. The Class D output stage keeps power consumption and heat modest in a cabinet under 10 kg. SmartConnect checks whether one or two RCA cables are fitted and sets the gain automatically. Auto wake-up switches to standby after 20 minutes without an input signal, and always on or trigger control can be selected instead.

Pairing

Small bookshelf or wireless speakers with limited bass gain the most from the Kube 8 MIE. KEF W2 platform wireless speakers run it in LFE mode with the crossover set from the KEF Connect app, and the KW1 kit makes the link wireless. A receiver feeds the LFE socket, while two-channel amplifiers lacking a sub output connect by speaker-level wiring.

Alternatives

The KEF Kube 10 MIE uses a 250 mm driver in a 370 mm tall cabinet and extends to 24 Hz at ±3 dB with 111 dB maximum output.
