The KC62 is a compact powered subwoofer from KEF, announced on 21 January 2021 as the model that introduced the company's Uni-Core driver technology. Its launch price was USD 1,499.99, and the current US list is USD 1,699.99, with the UK price at GBP 1,550. The curved cabinet is an aluminium extrusion offered in Carbon Black, Mineral White and Titanium Grey.

Key specs that matter

Two 6.5-inch drivers face in opposite directions and are fed by 1,000 W RMS of Class D amplification, split as 2 x 500 W. KEF rates the response at 11 Hz to 200 Hz within 3 dB and maximum output at 105 dB SPL at 1 m. The box measures 246 mm high, 256 mm wide and 248 mm deep and weighs 14 kg. Connections are RCA line inputs, speaker-level inputs and an RCA line output, and mains input accepts 100 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz. An optional KW1 adapter kit replaces the signal cable with a wireless link.

Engineering and use context

Uni-Core places both drivers on one shared motor system, with their voice coils arranged concentrically, and KEF states that this shrinks the cabinet by more than a third compared with a conventional force-cancelling pair while allowing longer excursion. Because the two cones move in opposition, the reaction forces on the enclosure largely cancel. The P-Flex surround is pleated so it can resist the air pressure inside the cabinet without adding much moving mass. Smart Distortion Control is a sensorless motional feedback scheme that monitors the current in the voice coil and corrects non-linear distortion as it appears. The Music Integrity Engine DSP adds iBX, or Intelligent Bass Extension, and a SmartLimiter that analyses the signal continuously to keep the amplifiers out of clipping. Five room placement EQ presets cover free space, wall, corner, cabinet mounting and a setting for households where output must stay restrained.

Pairing

The line output carries an adjustable high-pass filter, 40 Hz to 120 Hz in bypass mode and 40 Hz to 140 Hz in LFE mode, so the main speakers can be relieved of deep bass while the KC62 takes over below the chosen point. In LFE mode the variable low-pass covers 40 Hz to 140 Hz. Speaker-level inputs let it join a stereo amplifier that lacks a subwoofer output, and KEF SmartConnect support links it with the brand's wireless speakers.

Alternatives

The KEF KC92 uses the same amplifier with twin 9-inch drivers in a 352.5 x 330 x 360.5 mm cabinet weighing 20 kg and rated to 110 dB.
