The Kube 12 MIE is the 12-inch member of KEF's Kube MIE subwoofer line, introduced in February 2024 at a US price of USD 999.99. It sits between the Kube 10 MIE and the larger Kube 15 MIE, and like the rest of the family it uses a DSP tuning of the Music Integrity Engine written specifically for its driver and cabinet volume.

Key specs that matter

A 300 mm (12-inch) long-throw cone faces forward from a sealed cabinet, driven by 300 W RMS of Class D power. Frequency response is 22 Hz to 140 Hz at ±3 dB, with maximum output rated at 114 dB. The crossover is variable from 40 Hz to 140 Hz with a 24 dB per octave slope and has a separate LFE setting for use with a processor. A two-position phase switch gives 0 or 180 degrees. Inputs are an RCA line and LFE socket, a speaker-level terminal block and a 12 V trigger, and an expansion port accepts the KW1 wireless kit. Dimensions are 410 mm high, 393 mm wide and 410 mm deep including feet and rear panel, and the weight is 18.6 kg. Mains input covers 100 to 240 V, consumption is 300 VA and the finish is black.

Engineering and use context

Choosing a sealed box over a ported one means there is no port to generate air noise, and the gradual low-frequency roll-off makes the Kube 12 MIE tolerant of positions close to walls, in corners, or inside furniture and walls, according to KEF. The larger cone area of a 12-inch driver moves more air than the 10-inch model for each millimetre of excursion, which accounts for its 3 dB higher maximum output. The MIE platform includes iBX Intelligent Bass Extension, which monitors the incoming signal and adjusts processing continuously so the driver can deliver higher levels while low bass is maintained at quiet and loud settings alike. SmartConnect detects a single or a double RCA connection and adapts gain, avoiding the need for a splitter lead. Operating modes are auto wake-up with standby after 20 minutes of silence, permanently on, and trigger control. Unlike the KC92, the Kube has no line output or high-pass filter for main speakers.

Pairing

Home cinema systems feed the LFE input from an AV receiver, with the low-pass set to LFE. In stereo systems, speaker-level wiring from the amplifier outputs works where no sub output exists. KEF W2 wireless speakers treat the sub as an LFE device with crossover settings made in KEF Connect, while the KW1 kit allows a cable-free link.

Alternatives

The KEF KC92 is a more compact and more powerful KEF subwoofer, using two opposed 9-inch drivers with 1,000 W RMS and reaching 11 Hz.
