The OBERON 7 C is an active wireless tower from DALI of Denmark and the floorstanding member of the OBERON C family, a group completed by the compact OBERON 1 C, a wall-hung model and a centre speaker. It is part of the DALI EQUI ecosystem and takes its signal wirelessly from one of two DALI hubs, the SOUND HUB or the smaller SOUND HUB COMPACT, either as a stereo pair or within a multichannel system. The US list price was USD 2,499 per pair, with the SOUND HUB COMPACT at USD 449. The OBERON C line is now listed by DALI as discontinued.

Key specs that matter

Inside the enclosure are two 7 inch wood fibre bass and midrange drivers with SMC motors and a 29 mm damped textile dome tweeter. A full active 24 bit DSP crossover splits the signal at 2,450 Hz. Two closed-loop Class D amplifiers rated at 50 W peak each drive the tweeter and the woofer pair separately, with a 100 dB signal-to-noise ratio. DALI quotes 31 Hz to 26,000 Hz within 3 dB and a maximum level of 108 dB at 1 m. The bass reflex tuning is 40 Hz. The cabinet measures 1015 x 200 x 340 mm and weighs 15.7 kg. Maximum power draw is 62 W, and networked standby takes 1.3 W. Finishes are matte white, light oak, dark walnut and black ash.

Engineering and use context

Wireless audio arrives uncompressed at 96 kHz over a proprietary 30 bit protocol with typical latency under 15 ms. In the woofers, electrically non-conductive SMC elements in the magnet structure reduce eddy currents and hysteresis, improve flux linearity and keep the coil's inductance steadier as it travels within the gap, and DALI regards such drivers as well suited to active designs. The tweeter uses an oversized, very light diaphragm and voice coil, which raise sensitivity and power handling and let it work lower than smaller domes, giving the crossover more latitude. CNC-machined high strength MDF panels form the enclosure, and a large dual-flare port at the rear is shaped to limit turbulence and compression. An integral die-cast plinth accepts floor spikes or compatible feet.

Pairing

No external amplifier is needed, since sources connect to the hub rather than to the speakers. The rear panel holds the mains input, a power switch, speaker ID lights and a LINK and CONNECT button used for pairing and channel assignment. DALI recommends aiming the speakers straight into the room without toe-in, as the drivers are designed for wide dispersion.
