The OBERON 5 is the smaller of the original two floorstanders in the OBERON line from DALI, the Danish manufacturer, which described the range as affordable audiophile speakers when it premiered at IFA 2018 in Berlin. The launch group also held the OBERON 1 and OBERON 3 stand-mounts and the OBERON 7 tower, and the announced UK price for the OBERON 5 was GBP 700 per pair. In the US the pair sold for USD 1,099. DALI now files the whole OBERON series under discontinued products.
Key specs that matter
The OBERON 5 is a ported two-way speaker with twin 5.25 inch wood fibre woofers and a 29 mm tweeter using a soft woven fabric dome, crossed over at 2,400 Hz. Frequency range is 39 Hz to 26,000 Hz within 3 dB, sensitivity is 88 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m and nominal impedance is 6 ohm. Maximum output is 108 dB at 1 m, and DALI suggests 30 to 150 W of amplification. The rear port is tuned to 43 Hz. Each speaker stands 830 mm tall on a 162 mm wide, 283 mm deep footprint and weighs 11.1 kg with its grille. Vinyl wraps come in four colours - black ash, white, light oak and dark walnut.
Engineering and use context
The woofer cones blend fine-grain paper pulp with reinforcing wood fibres for a stiff but light diaphragm, and they are mounted on a low loss surround and spider. Inside the iron pole piece of each woofer motor sits a disc of SMC, DALI's patented Soft Magnetic Composite, which limits hysteresis and eddy currents and so lowers third-order distortion in the magnet system. The tweeter was developed for the OBERON range, and its oversized membrane moves less for a given output, keeping voice coil travel small. Its front plate copies the geometry used on OPTICON and RUBICON tweeters. Drivers and crossover were laid out for broad dispersion, which is why DALI advises against toeing its speakers in toward the listener. The high density MDF cabinet is CNC machined, braced across its interior and wrapped in vinyl, and it rests on a shaped aluminium base.
Pairing
The moderate load and above-average sensitivity keep demands modest, so a compact integrated amplifier or stereo receiver within the suggested range is enough. The terminal panel accepts a single cable run. Because the ports use the wall behind the cabinet to reinforce bass, DALI places the OBERON 5 between 15 and 80 cm from that wall. Spikes with M6 threads and rubber feet are packed with each pair.
Alternatives
The DALI OBERON 7 is the larger two-way tower from the same series, using a pair of 7 inch woofers.
