The Moya M1 is the largest loudspeaker of Vivid Audio, designed by Laurence Dickie and hand-made entirely in-house from Vivid's carbon-reinforced sandwich composite. It is a five-way system with 13 drivers, built to demonstrate the company's finding that extending bass response also improves the perception of higher frequency bands. The stack of eight bass drivers dominates its appearance.

Key specs that matter

Drivers are a D26DLC 26 mm tweeter and a D50DLC 50 mm upper midrange, both diamond-like coated alloy domes, a C100SCu 100 mm carbon-reinforced alloy midrange, two C175-76 175 mm lower midrange drivers and eight C225-100H 225 mm alloy woofers with 100 mm voice coils. Crossovers are at 125 Hz, 550 Hz, 1.7 kHz and 4 kHz. The frequency range is 19 Hz to 42 kHz at -6 dB. Sensitivity is 93 dB at 2.83 V/1 m, impedance is 5 ohms nominal with a 2.5 ohm minimum at 40 Hz, and music power handling is 3000 W RMS. It measures 1660 x 660 x 1210 mm high, wide and deep, and one speaker weighs 346 kg.

Engineering and use context

The bass section consists of four extensively braced enclosures, each housing two woofers in a horizontally opposed layout. The magnets of each pair are joined by a steel tie-bar, which cancels reaction forces and removes the need for a heavy enclosure, and reaction-cancelling ports limit turbulence. Each woofer can handle 800 W. The diamond-like coating is applied to the aluminium domes at a temperature well below their melting point, raising stiffness, and the D26DLC's first break-up lies above 50 kHz. Every driver above the bass uses tapered tube loading to absorb its rear wave, and the magnet systems are radial, with copper shielding on the midrange units. The cabinet is a carbon-reinforced, balsa-cored sandwich made by vacuum infusion. The passive crossover is a five-way fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley design built in three parts. Harmonic distortion is below -60 dB above 100 Hz. Standard finishes are piano black, pearl white and oyster grey matte, with automotive colours on request. The shipping weight of a pair exceeds one tonne.

Pairing

The low impedance dip in the bass calls for high-current amplifiers or bi-amplified monoblocks, while the high sensitivity keeps power demands reasonable. Its depth and mass suit dedicated rooms.

Alternatives

Vivid Audio's Giya G1 Spirit is the largest Giya, a four-way floorstander in a far smaller cabinet.
