Vivid Audio's Giya G2 Cu is a five-driver, four-way tower, part of the Giya Cu range that also includes the G1 Spirit Cu, G3 Cu and G4 Cu. Vivid describes the G2 as an evolution of the original G1, at 80% of its height and half its volume, intended for medium-sized and larger rooms. Alongside Giya, Vivid builds the Moya, Kaya and Oval ranges.

Key specs that matter

The D26 tweeter is a 26 mm alloy and carbon dome, and the D50Cu upper midrange is a 50 mm alloy and carbon dome with a copper cap. The C125SCu lower midrange uses a 125 mm alloy cone with a 50 mm voice coil and a copper cap, which Vivid rates as equivalent to a 6.5 inch driver. Bass comes from two C175 units with 175 mm metal cones, 76 mm voice coils and underhung motors, equivalent to 9.5 inch drivers. Crossover points are 220 Hz, 880 Hz and 3,500 Hz. Sensitivity is 89 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, and impedance is 6 ohm nominal with a 4 ohm minimum and low reactance. The range extends from 29 Hz to 36 kHz at -6 dB, and response is ±2 dB from 33 Hz to 33 kHz. Harmonic distortion is below 0.5% under 220 Hz, 0.1% from 220 Hz to 3.5 kHz and 0.3% above. Power handling is 800 W RMS music. The speaker is 1383 mm high, 360 mm wide and 638 mm deep and weighs 48 kg with the internal crossover, or 43 kg with the external one.

Engineering and use context

The three upper drivers are loaded by tapered tubes that absorb their rear output. For the bass, the reflex enclosure ends in an exponentially tapered absorber horn that curls over the top of the cabinet, removing rear-wave resonances without stuffing while keeping the full output of the port. The drivers are built by hand, use radial magnets and are patented, and copper caps on the midrange motors reduce distortion. The first break-up of the D26 dome lies at 44 kHz. The cabinet is a vacuum-infused composite of glass-reinforced skins around a balsa core, with a carbon-fibre base. An optional external crossover in a piano-gloss box provides two pairs of terminals for bi-wiring or bi-amping, connected through an 8-way cable with an NL8 Speakon plug, and the speaker can be run fully active with four amplifiers through the same cable and a line-level crossover. Piano Black, Lexus Pearl White and Oyster Matte are the catalogue colours, and bespoke paint is possible.

Pairing

The G2 Cu presents an amplifier-friendly load and suits many amplifiers, and its power handling allows high-power designs. Bi-amping and active operation are options through the external crossover.

Alternatives

The Vivid Giya G3 Cu uses the same upper drivers with two 135 mm bass units in a 1161 mm cabinet for smaller rooms.
