The Maestro Utopia Evo is a floor-standing three-way reflex column from Focal and part of the Utopia range from the French manufacturer. It was listed at USD 76,000 per pair with a five-year warranty. Finishes span Carrara White, Black Lacquer, Ash Grey, British Racing Green and Metallic Blue, together with two combinations named cream with light walnut and brown with dark walnut.
Key specs that matter
Two 27 cm W woofers work below 280 Hz, a 16.5 cm Power Flower W midrange with an NIC motor covers the band up to 2.2 kHz, while the highest range is assigned to a 27 mm IAL2 tweeter with an inverted pure beryllium dome. Focal rates the response at 25 Hz to 40 kHz within 3 dB, with a -6 dB point of 21 Hz. Nominal impedance is 8 ohm and the minimum is 3.1 ohm, while sensitivity is 93 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m. The column stands 1,470 mm tall, 770 mm wide and 455 mm deep and weighs 116 kg.
Engineering and use context
The W membrane is Focal's third-generation sandwich cone that combines glass fibre sheets with a foam core. Power Flower describes a multi-ferrite magnet arrangement, used to raise magnetic energy and improve cooling. NIC stands for Neutral Inductance Circuit, a motor with an optimised Faraday ring intended to keep the magnetic field stable as the cone moves. One of the two woofers carries MDS, the Magnetic Damping System, which Focal presents as an adaptive bass adjustment. The cabinet follows the Gamma Structure approach, an MDF build designed with vibration mapping to make the enclosure inert. Suspensions use TMD, a Tuned Mass Damper in which toroidal weights are positioned to damp harmonic resonances. The drivers sit in separate cabinets, which permits the adjustment Focal calls Focus Time, aligning the channels to the listening point. Bass output and midrange-tweeter output can both be adjusted. At the back, the base curves outward and protrudes about 15 cm behind the tower, forming a plateau on which four WBT terminals are mounted horizontally for bi-wiring or bi-amping.
Pairing
Focal recommends amplifiers between 25 W and 600 W per channel. The high sensitivity keeps modest amplifiers usable, but the impedance minimum near 3 ohm calls for a design that remains stable and current-capable into low loads, particularly at the upper end of that power range.

Also from Focal, the Scala Utopia Evo belongs to the same Utopia floorstanding series.
