The M3 is a sealed three-way tower made by Magico of Hayward, California, and part of the brand's M Series alongside the larger M6. It was announced in May 2016 with shipping planned for the third quarter of that year, at a price of USD 75,000 per pair. The speaker has five drivers per side and brought the M Series construction of carbon fibre over an internal frame down to a smaller footprint.
Key specs that matter
Magico fits one 28 mm diamond-coated beryllium dome tweeter, one 6 inch Graphene Nano-Tec midrange and three 7 inch Graphene Nano-Tec bass units, so the bass section spreads its work across three cones rather than one large woofer. Rated sensitivity is 91 dB at a nominal impedance of 4 ohm. Magico gives a recommended amplifier range of 20 to 500 W. Each cabinet stands 120 cm high, 34 cm wide and 49 cm deep, and weighs 145 kg. Frequency range and crossover points are absent from the published M3 data.
Engineering and use context
Inside the enclosure an internal three-axis matrix framework provides rigidity and is wrapped in a sandwich skin of carbon fibre. The midrange works from its own purpose-built sub-enclosure made of a proprietary polymer, which isolates it from the pressure generated by the bass units. Midrange and bass cones are made from Multi-Wall carbon XG Nanographene with a proprietary carbon weave, and Magico states this material is 20% lighter and 300% stiffer than the cones it used before. The bass drivers run on an underhung neodymium motor with pure titanium voice coils. The tweeter has a neodymium motor tuned to the sensitivity and power handling of the M3, with extra-long excursion and wide dispersion as design goals, and its diamond coating on beryllium is chosen for stiffness in relation to mass. All five drivers are joined by Magico's Elliptical Symmetry Crossover topology. The speaker is supplied with MPOD feet, a noise channeling support based on constrained layer damping that dissipates vibration into the floor.
Pairing
Thanks to its efficiency, even amplifiers of fairly low output can drive the M3, but the low nominal impedance favours solid-state or high-current amplifiers able to hold up into such a load. The sealed alignment and triple bass units also give headroom for large power amplifiers with a lot of power. Given the heavy cabinets, placement needs planning before delivery, since moving the cabinet later requires several people.
Alternatives
A bigger M Series tower is the Magico M6, fitted with three 10.5 inch bass drivers and a weight of 177 kg.
