La Campanella is a two-way column speaker made by Acapella Audio Arts, founded in Duisburg in 1978, and the current version is sold as La Campanella 2. It pairs a woofer column with a spherical horn head, and unlike the larger Acapella columns it does without the ion tweeter, relying on a single horn-loaded driver for everything above the bass range. A taller La Campanella Alto 2 sits above it in this series.
Key specs that matter
Four 6.5-inch woofers work in parallel in a ported enclosure, each driven by a magnet weighing 1.2 kg. Above them a 1-inch driver with a membrane lighter than 0.3 g feeds a 450 mm hyperspherical wideband horn. The quoted range is 25 Hz to 25 kHz, with an efficiency of 93 dB at 1 W and 1 m and an 8 ohm impedance. Load capacity is 100 W to 1,000 W for a 10 ms impulse. The woofer body measures 1,300 x 265 x 530 mm, and with the horn the overall size is 1,450 x 450 x 610 mm. Weight is 82 kg per speaker. The US price was USD 26,000 per pair in black or white acrylic, and an earlier finish combined a lacquered burgundy horn with a black tower.
Engineering and use context
The horn is designed around a single point source for high frequencies and covers the band from about 700 Hz up to above 20 kHz, spanning several octaves without a further crossover. Acapella explains the choice by pointing to the sensitivity of human hearing between 1 kHz and 4 kHz, which falls fully inside the horn's range, and by the aim of joining bass transients with upper overtones from one low-mass membrane. The horn mouth is non-concentric and opens downward. The spherical head grows out of a long rectangular column behind it that projects about 530 mm to the rear. Within the four-driver bass array the top woofer is run into frequencies clearly above 100 Hz while the other three share the lower range. Acapella keeps the exact lower crossover points and the enclosure construction confidential.
Pairing
The maker recommends amplifier power from 15 W upward, and the high efficiency and steady load make low-power valve amplifiers practical, while solid-state designs can use the high impulse rating. With no powered tweeter on board, the speaker needs no mains connection of its own.
Alternatives
In the same Acapella floorstanding line the La Campanella Alto 2 grows to 225 cm with eight woofers and a rated efficiency of 95 dB.
