The Triolon Excalibur MK V is a four-way horn loudspeaker from Acapella Audio Arts of Germany, now in its fifth generation after more than 25 years of development. Acapella positions it alongside the larger Sphaeron Excalibur, sharing that system's core concept in a somewhat smaller format, and lists the price only on request.
Key specs that matter
The transmission range runs from 25 Hz to 40 kHz. Efficiency is rated at 94 dB at 1 W and 1 m, with a nominal impedance of 4 ohm. Acapella quotes a load capacity of 100 W to 1000 W, the upper figure given as a 10 ms impulse value, and states that the system already works with amplifiers from 15 watts. Each speaker weighs 200 kg. Without its horn the enclosure measures 2160 x 965 x 750 mm (height, width, depth), and with the horn attached the dimensions become 2160 x 1087 x 950 mm.
Engineering and use context
Six 10 inch woofers handle the low range of each speaker. Above them, a 12 inch driver loads a spherical horn of 780 mm for the lower midrange, and a 2 inch driver feeds a second spherical horn of 460 mm for the midrange proper. The treble is reproduced by Acapella's plasma tweeter, an ion design placed at the centre of the system with the large horns and woofers grouped around it. According to the maker, the layout of the four-way crossover together with the mechanical construction of the speaker gives a time coherence approaching a one-point source. Acapella specifies the Triolon Excalibur MK V for listening rooms from 25 m2 upward. Finish options shown by the company include a golden ion tweeter housing in walnut diamond combined with a horn painted in BricoRed.
Pairing
Acapella builds its own amplification in the Energeia line, handmade in Germany. The Energeia Reference Mono is a bridged monoblock delivering more than 2000 W into 4 ohm, with no global negative feedback, signal paths wired in pure silver cable, a separate transformer for switch-on and standby, and dual hard silver-plated pure copper terminal pairs on every monoblock so bi-wiring is possible. Its input sensitivity is 15 Vpp and each unit weighs 85 kg. Its partner, the Energeia Reference Pre, uses a dual mono, fully balanced tube hybrid circuit running in pure Class A without negative feedback, with three balanced and three RCA inputs and a 48-step volume control.
Alternatives
The Acapella Hyperion is a floorstanding horn system from the same company, reaching 16 Hz with 96 dB efficiency into 8 ohm and weighing 300 kg per speaker.
