The K6 Signature is a floor-standing loudspeaker in the K Series by ProAc, the firm located in Brackley, Northamptonshire, and it shares the overall cabinet concept of the regular K6 while differing in several respects. The driver order has been rearranged, the midrange unit is larger, and ProAc presents the result as a true high-end design with a flat response across its range.
Key specs that matter
ProAc lists 4 ohms as the nominal impedance and 90 dB as the linear sensitivity for 1 watt at 1 metre. Response extends from 25 Hz to 30 kHz. Amplifier power between 10 and 250 watts is recommended. The enclosure measures 1150 mm in height, 212 mm in width and 344 mm in depth, and each unit weighs 44 kg. Drivers are two 165 mm Kevlar bass and midrange units, a 75 mm soft dome for the midrange and one ribbon for the treble.
Engineering and use context
In the Signature layout the ribbon tweeter is positioned so that it arrives at ear level for a seated listener, and the two woofers move to the top and the bottom of the driver array. The larger dome, used here instead of the smaller unit found in the K6, is produced in-house, sits in a special horn whose wave guide is machined from billet aluminium, and has a vented chamber behind it. The woofers themselves are Studio professional drive units with polymer impregnated Kevlar cones. On the ribbon, a diaphragm ProAc compares in weight to a human hair is driven by an alnico motor and backed by damping material. The network is laid out on a two-layer board using selected components, and internal runs use multistrand oxygen free copper cable supplied by ProAc. Buyers can choose among six standard veneers - Silk White, Cherry, Natural Oak, Walnut, Mahogany and Black Ash - or order Tamo Ash, Ebony, Liquidambar or Rosewood as surcharged special finishes. The featured pair on the maker's page wears Ebony. A crimplene grille designed to be acoustically transparent is included, and magnetic grilles suit certain veneers.
Pairing
Twin binding post sets at the back make bi-wiring or bi-amplification possible, as the crossover is divided into two sections. The broad amplifier recommendation gives owners a wide choice of partnering electronics.
Alternatives
The ProAc K10 is a taller K Series floorstander with a pair of larger Kevlar woofers, a dome midrange and a ribbon tweeter in a 1499 mm tall cabinet.
