The K6 is a tall, slim floor-standing model from the K Series of ProAc, the British manufacturer based in Brackley, Northamptonshire, which aims the model at buyers wanting a high-end speaker with a flat response across the band. Its driver set pairs two handmade Kevlar bass units with a small dome midrange in an aluminium horn and the ProAc ribbon tweeter.
Key specs that matter
Nominal impedance is 4 ohms, and sensitivity is quoted as 90 dB linear for an input of 1 watt measured at 1 metre. The stated frequency range is 25 Hz to 30 kHz. ProAc suggests amplifiers rated from 10 to 250 watts. The cabinet is 1150 mm high, 212 mm wide and 344 mm deep, with a weight of 44 kg per cabinet. The woofers are 165 mm Studio professional units, the midrange is a 50 mm soft dome and a ribbon covers the top octaves.
Engineering and use context
Each woofer has polymer impregnated Kevlar cones and is made by hand at ProAc. Above them, the soft dome midrange sits in an air coupling that is CNC machined from a billet of 6061 aluminium alloy. ProAc says its ribbon diaphragm weighs no more than a human hair, and this tweeter combines an alnico magnet with damping in the chamber behind it. For the enclosure ProAc uses its traditional mixture of HDF panels in several thicknesses, heavily treated with bitumen, so that the walls including the bitumen layer reach 35 mm. The company links this approach to its research into composite materials. The crossover is built on a two-layer circuit board, and wiring inside the cabinet is multistrand oxygen free copper throughout. Standard veneers are Cherry, Walnut, Black Ash, Natural Oak, Mahogany and Silk White, while Rosewood, Liquidambar and Ebony count as special order finishes at extra cost. The featured example is shown in Rosewood. A crimplene grille that passes sound freely is supplied, and magnetic versions can be had on some veneers.
Pairing
The K6 has a split crossover with two terminal pairs, so it can take two cable runs from one amplifier, or a separate amplifier channel on each half of the network. ProAc names audiophiles and music lovers as the intended owners, and its amplifier recommendation leaves a broad choice of electronics.
Alternatives
The ProAc K6 Signature uses a similar tall slim cabinet but moves the ribbon tweeter to seated ear height and swaps the midrange for a larger dome with a vented rear chamber.
