The Response D30 belongs to the Response series of floor-standing two-way speakers made by ProAc, the Brackley firm whose chief designer Stewart Tyler is credited with its development. In the Mahogany veneer listed here it is part of the model family that ProAc supplies either as the D30DS with a dome tweeter or as the D30RS with a ribbon. The maker presents it as a smaller alternative to the D48, sharing that larger sibling's type of bass loading, cone material, tweeters and crossover approach.

Key specs that matter

Rated frequency response is 20 Hz to 30 kHz, sensitivity is given as 89 dB linear for 1 watt at 1 metre, and the nominal impedance is 8 ohms. A single ProAc driver covers low and mid frequencies, and its cone is made of Pagina Mica, damped acoustically, fitted with a phase plug and coated with acoustic dope. The dome version uses a 25 mm silk tweeter with air cooling, and the ribbon version uses a 60 mm by 10 mm ribbon with rear chamber damping. Cabinet height is 1041 mm.

Engineering and use context

ProAc explains Pagina Mica as reed leaves mixed with mica and then coated with acoustic dope, and describes the D30 as the latest of its models to take up this material when it was introduced. The tweeter units in both versions are the same high frequency drivers ProAc fits to the D48 and D48R. The HQC crossover network uses dedicated components wired with the company's multistrand oxygen free copper cable, and its classic split layout gives the option of bi-wiring or bi-amping. The enclosure is built from MDF damped with bitumen and is loaded by a bass reflex port, and ProAc states that each of its speakers is built by hand by a technician who also tests it. Mahogany is one of five standard real wood veneers alongside Black Ash, Cherry, Walnut and Oak, Silk White is also offered, and Rosewood or Ebony are available at additional cost. An acoustically transparent crimplene grille is fitted, and connections are made through nickel silver terminals. ProAc supplies its own spikes for the D30. The maker has since moved the line to the D30S generation under the D30DS and D30RS names.

ProAc recommends amplifiers rated between 10 W and 200 W and describes the current D30S version as easy to drive.

Alternatives

The ProAc Response D48 is the bigger floorstander of the series, fitted with two 165 mm bass and midrange units, a 4 ohm nominal impedance and a height of 1200 mm.
