The Hyphn is a statement floorstanding loudspeaker from Monitor Audio, the production version of the Concept 50 prototype that the British company showed at High End Munich in 2022 to mark its 50th anniversary. It was shipping by July 2026 at USD 99,000 per pair, or from USD 109,000 in more than 200 custom colours, and the UK price is GBP 70,000. Each pair is hand-built in Rayleigh, Essex.

Key specs that matter

Every speaker has two bass pillars linked by a central section, the hyphen that gives the model its name, which holds the M-Array - an MPD III tweeter in a waveguide surrounded by six 50 mm RDT III midrange drivers. Four 8-inch (200 mm) RDT III bass drivers are arranged in a force-cancelling layout. Crossover points are 350 Hz and 3.7 kHz, and the network uses ClarityCap capacitors. The in-room response is 18 Hz to 60 kHz, sensitivity is 86 dB, and impedance is 4 ohms nominal with a 3.5 ohm minimum at 2.2 kHz. Power handling is 800 W, the recommended amplifier range is 200 to 1,600 W and maximum output is 129 dB. The speaker measures 1,392 x 502 x 520 mm and weighs 106.9 kg.

Engineering and use context

The cabinet is milled from a composite of acrylic, minerals and pigments rather than wood or MDF. In the force-cancelling bass arrangement, pairs of woofers move in opposite directions, so the reaction forces on the cabinet cancel out and less vibration is passed into the enclosure. Surrounding the tweeter with six small midrange drivers places the midrange and treble sources around a common centre. RDT III cones use a Nomex honeycomb core between aluminium and carbon fibre skins, while the MPD III has a folded-film diaphragm. A bass reflex port tuned to 25 Hz extends the low frequencies. Standard finishes are Pure Satin White, Matte Black and Matte Heritage Green, with a Custom Edition in any of more than 200 colours, and a five-year warranty applies.

Pairing

With moderate sensitivity, a low impedance and a high recommended power range, the Hyphn needs very powerful amplification, such as high-current stereo amplifiers or monoblocks. A subwoofer is unnecessary given the deep in-room bass. Given its weight, it belongs in a large room well above 20 m2.
