The Vivid Audio GIYA G4 is the smallest member of the GIYA range, a four-way floorstander carrying five drivers. Vivid notes that reaching this size took more than a smaller enclosure, since two new drive units and some careful crossover shaping were needed. The model is now in the legacy catalogue and was followed by the GIYA G4 Series 2.
Key specs that matter
Crossover points sit at 220 Hz, 880 Hz and 3.5 kHz. Response is 39 Hz to 33 kHz within 2 dB on the reference axis and 36 Hz to 36 kHz at -6 dB. Sensitivity is 86 dB at 2.83 V RMS measured at 1 m on axis, and impedance is 6 ohms nominal, 4 ohms minimum, with low reactance. Power handling is 450 W RMS. Each speaker is 1021 mm high, 302 mm wide and 508 mm deep, and it weighs 28.5 kg net. The shell is a glass reinforced sandwich composite with a Soric core.
Engineering and use context
The D26 tweeter is a 26 mm metal dome with its first breakup mode at 44 kHz, and the D50 midrange is a 50 mm metal dome. Both domes follow a catenary profile, sit on isolating compliant mounts and load into tapered tubes behind radially polarised magnets. Such radial magnets have a large open centre, which lets the rear output pass from the diaphragm into the absorber without reflections. The C100S lower midrange unit is a 100 mm alloy cone, also tube loaded, and its underhung motor (short coil, long gap) drives a 50 mm CCA ribbon voice coil wound on a highly vented former, and the unit has an aligned chassis and a radial magnet. Two C125L 125 mm alloy cones cover the bass, again with short-coil long-gap motors and radial magnets, sitting on reaction-cancelling compliant mounts.
Designer Laurence Dickie developed the tapered tube absorber for the Nautilus, using it to kill resonances and reflections behind the drivers, and the GIYA series extends the idea to every one of its four driver sections, bass included. The tapered bass tube curls round to give the cabinet its curved outline. Vivid combines that exponentially tapered absorber with two critically tuned vents that cancel each other's reaction forces, a patented arrangement meant to keep the absorption benefits while gaining the efficiency and compact volume of a reflex enclosure.
Pairing
The benign impedance suits most solid state amplifiers, though the modest sensitivity calls for real power reserves in larger rooms.
Alternatives
The GIYA G3 keeps the same four-way, five-driver topology in a taller 1161 mm cabinet with 135 mm bass units and an 800 W rating.
