The GIYA G2 is a floorstanding loudspeaker from Vivid Audio, launched in 2010 as a smaller sibling to the GIYA G1 of 2008 for more modest listening spaces. It has half the internal volume of the G1. Vivid now lists it as a legacy product, replaced by the GIYA G2 series 2.

Key specs that matter

The G2 is a 4-way design with five drivers. The D26 26 mm metal dome tweeter and D50 50 mm metal dome midrange use tapered tube loading, catenary dome profiles, radially polarized magnets and isolating compliant mounts. A single C125S 125 mm lower midrange has a short-coil long-gap motor and a 50 mm CCA ribbon coil on a highly vented former. Two C175 175 mm metal-coned bass units carry 75 mm copper ribbon coils and reaction cancelling mounts. Crossover points are 220 Hz, 880 Hz and 3,500 Hz. Sensitivity is 89 dB at 2.83 V RMS at 1 m on axis. Impedance is 6 ohms nominal with a 4 ohm minimum and low reactance. The frequency range extends from 29 Hz to 36,000 Hz at -6 dB, and on the reference axis the response holds within 2 dB from 33 Hz to 33,000 Hz. Each speaker is 1,383 mm high, 360 mm wide and 638 mm deep and weighs 55 kg net.

Engineering and use context

Bass loading is a reflex design reinforced by an exponentially tapered tube. The C175 uses an aluminium magnesium alloy diaphragm and keeps exactly the same magnet and voice coil as the C225 in the G1, and identical suspension profiles allow 50 mm of mechanical travel. Each driver and filter network is set up for a true fourth order acoustic response at every crossover, giving zero phase shift between successive drivers and symmetrical vertical coverage. Compact radial magnets let the drivers sit close together. The main filter parts are air cored inductors and polypropylene capacitors, and all crossovers are wired by hand without a PCB. The enclosure is a sandwich of fibre reinforced skins over a low density core, stiffened inside by lateral fibre reinforced grids that push cabinet modes out of band. The D26 tweeter has its first break-up at 44,000 Hz. Low pass filters for bass drivers normally need large component values, and the unusual parameters of the C175 make those in the G2 larger still.

Pairing

Vivid gives a power handling figure of 800 W RMS on music programme, and the load the amplifier sees never falls below 4 ohms.

Alternatives

The Vivid Audio GIYA G3 is a smaller legacy floorstander in the same GIYA series, measuring 1,161 mm high.
