The EPICON 6 is the smaller of the two towers in the EPICON family from DALI, the loudspeaker company based in Norager, Denmark. It sits beneath the EPICON 8 and above the EPICON 2 stand-mount, and a VOKAL centre speaker lets the trio be built into a home cinema. The German recommended price was EUR 8,998 per pair. The EPICON range is no longer current and appears among DALI's discontinued products.

Key specs that matter

The maker describes the topology as 2.5 + 0.5-way. Two 165 mm wood fibre woofers cover bass and midrange, and a hybrid treble module combines a 29 mm soft textile dome with a 10 x 55 mm planar ribbon. Filter points sit at 700 Hz, 2,550 Hz and 15,000 Hz. The quoted range is 35 Hz to 30,000 Hz within 3 dB, sensitivity is 88 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m, nominal impedance is 5 ohm and peak output reaches 110 dB at 1 m. Port tuning is 32.5 Hz. With its base fitted, one cabinet measures 1062 x 320 x 459 mm and weighs 30 kg. Gloss black, gloss white, gloss walnut and Ruby Macassar were offered.

Engineering and use context

DALI has designed and produced its woofer and midrange drivers at its Danish headquarters since 2009. On the EPICON 6 the cones are very light paper diaphragms with a wood fibre coating, mounted in cast aluminium baskets and driven by Linear Drive motors that use Soft Magnetic Composite. This patented material has high magnetic conductivity but very low electrical conductivity, which cuts distortion caused by mechanical loss in the motor. Each woofer works in its own individually tuned sub-enclosure, with a port placed right behind it and exiting at the rear. The enclosure walls are formed from six bonded MDF layers, pressed under heat into a curve with no parallel surfaces and anchored to a 53 mm MDF spine, while the dual-layer baffle is 33 mm thick. The two tweeters share a solid aluminium plate, and the planar element works down to about 2.5 kHz so dispersion stays wide as the dome grows more directional. Internal wiring uses Cordial cable developed for the Megaline, and the real wood veneer carries ten hand-polished lacquer layers.

Pairing

The fairly low nominal impedance and a 50 to 300 W recommendation suggest a solid-state amplifier with sufficient current reserve rather than a small valve unit. The binding posts, made by DALI, accept bi-wiring or bi-amping and are linked by gold-plated solid steel bars. DALI asks for more than 25 cm between cabinet and rear wall, and steel spikes with floor discs are included.
