The Coltrane Quintet is a Swedish four-way tower speaker made by Marten, presented on 30 April 2024 and shown at High End Munich that year. Within the Coltrane series it sits below the Momento 2 and Supreme 2 and replaces the Coltrane 3 of 2016. Its introductory price stood at USD 190,000 per pair, or from EUR 170,000, and a Statement Edition costs USD 209,000 per pair.

Key specs that matter

Five drive units are mounted in this reflex-loaded design. A 1 inch pure diamond tweeter handles the top, a 3 inch pure beryllium unit covers the upper midrange, a 7 inch convex carbon fibre cone takes the mid-bass and two 10 inch aluminium sandwich woofers run below it. First-order filters divide the signal at 170 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 6,000 Hz. Marten quotes 18 to 60,000 Hz within 2 dB, 89 dB at 2.83 V, a 4 ohm nominal load falling to 3.0 ohm and a power rating of 350 W. The cabinet measures 41.2 x 120.5 x 74 cm and each speaker weighs 115 kg, rising to 52.5 x 127.9 x 78.8 cm when mounted on its stands.

Engineering and use context

Carbon fibre laminate between 20 and 30 mm thick forms the enclosure, which is left visible and polished or lacquered in Piano Black. Its internal volume is 25 percent larger than that of the Coltrane 3, which Marten links to the lower bass reach of the new model. The front baffle is a sandwich of aluminium, fibreboard and solid wood, available in matte oak or matte walnut, or lacquered in Piano Black, Piano Grey, Piano Plum, Piano Red or Piano Gold. A first-order network uses gentle slopes, so each driver overlaps its neighbours across a wide band, and this is why the design needs drivers with wide usable bandwidth such as the diamond and beryllium units. Internal wiring comes from the Swedish cable maker Jorma, with the Statement Edition moving to Jorma Statement conductors. Marten Isolators sit under the cabinet to decouple it from the floor, and WBT Nextgen terminals are fitted in a bi-wire arrangement.

Pairing

The low impedance minimum calls for transistor amplification that remains stable with a low-impedance load and delivers generous current, and the dual terminals let owners bi-wire the bass section separately from the upper three drivers or split them across two stereo amplifiers. With twin woofers reaching into the lowest octave and a cabinet weight above 100 kg, the speakers suit large listening spaces well beyond 20 m2 and a solid floor.
