Marten of Molndal, Sweden, builds the Coltrane Momento 2 as a four-way tower within the Coltrane series. It carries over the technology of the Coltrane Supreme 2, including the same diamond tweeters and ceramic drivers, but places everything in a single unified cabinet that Marten says is easier to position. Owners can order a Statement Edition upgrade with Jorma Statement wiring inside and better crossover components.
Key specs that matter
Nine Accuton drive units are fitted to each speaker - a 20 mm diamond tweeter, a 51 mm lower treble diamond tweeter, a 7 inch pure ceramic midrange, six 8 inch aluminium sandwich bass drivers and four 10 inch aluminium sandwich passive radiators for the lowest octaves. Frequency range is 20 Hz to 100 kHz within plus or minus 2 dB. Sensitivity is 90 dB at 1 m and 2.83 V, and impedance is 6 ohm nominal with a 3.7 ohm minimum. The power rating is 450 W. Dimensions are 54 cm wide, 182 cm high and 59 cm deep, and the net weight is 230 kg per speaker. Marten quotes distortion below 0.05 percent.
Engineering and use context
The crossover follows the bespoke first-order technique developed for the Supreme 2, with filter points at 350, 3,500 and 8,000 Hz. Marten chose first-order slopes for time and phase coherence between the drivers, and combines them with its CELL driver technology. The cabinet consists of an inner box of solid wood inside an outer box of carbon fibre laminate and solid wood. The sides are 25 mm carbon fibre laminate, while front, back, top and bottom are 70 mm solid laminated wood. According to Marten, the lever principle between the material layers and the slight curve of the side walls create a non-stretching effect that makes the structure very stiff and lowers distortion. Signal reaches the drivers through Jorma Design internal wiring, and the terminals are WBT Nextgen with bi-wiring. The stands are polished stainless steel fitted with Black Diamond Racing pucks and cones. The sides are high-gloss carbon fibre, and the wooden fronts come in Matt Walnut, Matt Cherry, Matt Maple or Matt Oak.
Pairing
The low impedance minimum and high power rating suggest a powerful solid-state amplifier with generous current reserves, and the twin terminal pairs also allow the bass section and upper drivers to be fed by separate amplifier channels. Given their weight, moving and placing the speakers requires planning and a floor that can carry the load.
Alternatives
The Marten Coltrane Supreme 2 is the related Coltrane model that spreads the same diamond tweeter and ceramic driver technology across a system without the unified cabinet of the Momento 2.
