The Cellini is the model that first brought together the hyperspherical horn, the ion tweeter and a 10-inch woofer in one Acapella Audio Arts cabinet. The Duisburg maker had introduced its hyperspherical midrange horn in the Poseydon, and the Cellini packages that horn in a more compact domestic system. It marks the entry point into the Acapella range for speakers fitted with an ion tweeter, and it is offered in a standard form and as a High Cellini with upgraded bass.

Key specs that matter

The standard version uses one 10-inch bass driver, while the High version carries two. Midrange comes from a 1-inch driver on a 620 mm hyperspherical wideband horn, and treble from the ION TW 1 plasma tweeter. Acapella quotes a transmission range of 25 Hz to 40 kHz, an efficiency of 91 dB at 1 W and 1 m and a nominal impedance of 8 ohm. Load capacity is stated as 100 W to 1,000 W for a 10 ms impulse. Without its horn the cabinet measures 1,460 x 330 x 475 mm, and with the horn in place the speaker stands 1,685 mm tall, 620 mm wide and 605 mm deep. The standard Cellini weighs 105 kg and the High Cellini 120 kg. Pair prices were EUR 37,000 for the standard model and EUR 49,000 for the High version, and in the US USD 45,000 and USD 62,500.

Engineering and use context

A slim bass enclosure carries the woofer and also acts as the support for the spherical horn and the ion tweeter mounted above it, so the high-frequency parts sit on the bass cabinet rather than on a separate stand. The ion tweeter works without any diaphragm. A high voltage keeps a constant arc burning inside the unit, the arc is modulated by the music signal, and the resulting changes in electron density move the surrounding air. As a stand-alone unit this design covers 5 kHz to beyond 50 kHz with variable crossover frequencies and an input filter slope of about 12 dB per octave. The High Cellini goes beyond the second woofer by using tighter-tolerance parts, super-matched drivers and a pure silver internal cable loom.

Pairing

Acapella names 15 W as the lowest recommended amplifier output, so small valve amplifiers can drive the Cellini, and the wide impulse rating also accepts high-power transistor designs. The tweeter runs from mains power, rated at 234 V and 50 Hz as standard with 110, 117 and 227 V options, so each speaker needs a power outlet nearby.

Alternatives

A bigger step in the same Acapella floorstanding range is the High Cecilia, which keeps the same horn and plasma tweeter but uses three 10-inch woofers including an internal subwoofer.
