The Campanile is a room-height column loudspeaker from Acapella Audio Arts, the Duisburg company that Alfred Rudolph and Hermann Winters set up in 1978 around their idea of a modern trumpet. The current generation is sold as the Campanile 2, with a High Campanile 2 variant above it that adds ceramic silver bi-wiring and an upgraded filter. It combines three technologies the firm is known for - a bank of front-firing woofers, a large hyperspherical midrange horn and an ion plasma tweeter.

Key specs that matter

Four 10-inch woofers handle the bass, a 1-inch driver feeds a 620 mm hyperspherical horn, and an ion plasma unit takes the top octaves. Acapella lists a transmission range of 25 Hz to 40 kHz, an efficiency of 95 dB at 1 W and 1 m and an impedance of 6 to 8 ohm. Load capacity is given as 100 W to 1,000 W as a 10 ms impulse. The body measures 2,360 x 350 x 690 mm, and with the horn fitted the footprint grows to 620 mm wide and 800 mm deep at the same 2.36 m height. Each speaker weighs 250 kg. In Germany the standard version was listed at EUR 67,860 per pair and the High version at EUR 89,580.

Engineering and use context

Acapella builds the cabinet as a sealed three-way design built from three bolted modules - a lower bass section, the midrange section and an upper bass section. Two woofers share each bass module, and each pair works in 60 litres of closed volume. Plywood, MDF and a 3 mm acrylic outer skin are layered to form constrained damping, and internal bracing plus carcass tensioning keep panel resonances down. The horn covers roughly 1 kHz to 7 kHz with a 25 mm silk dome, and a potted crossover with phase-correct low-order filters sits behind it. Above 7 kHz the ION TW 2S tweeter takes over, sitting in a central spherical bronze horn. It applies about 7,000 volts between two electrodes to ionise the air into a plasma flame, and a built-in valve amplifier modulates that flame with the signal, so no membrane has to move. A revised grounding scheme separates the tweeter amplifier galvanically from the rest of the circuit, and fine adjustment of both tweeter and horn level is provided.

Pairing

The high efficiency means Acapella recommends amplifier output from only 15 W, so low-power valve designs are viable, while the high impulse rating leaves room for large transistor amplifiers. The High version's bi-wire terminals let the woofer modules and the horn section be wired separately, and the tweeter needs a mains connection of its own.

Alternatives

Inside the same tall-column category Acapella also builds the La Campanella Alto 2, a 225 cm design fitted with eight woofers per side.
