The B-100 is the smaller of two bookshelf models in the Klipsch Synergy Black Label series, a value line that Klipsch pitches on high efficiency and affordability. The range also includes the B-200 bookshelf, the F-200 and F-300 floorstanders, the C-200 centre channel and the Sub-100 and Sub-120 subwoofers. The pair is the 2019 version of the model. It is sold in pairs in a black ash vinyl finish, and Klipsch also offers a certified factory refurbished version through its own store. The maker positions it for use as a left, centre, right or surround channel.
Key specs that matter
A single 4 inch woofer is paired in every cabinet with a 0.75 inch tweeter. Klipsch gives the frequency response as 64 Hz to 23 kHz within 3 dB and the sensitivity as 90 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m. Nominal impedance is 8 ohm, and power handling is 50 W RMS continuous with a 200 W peak figure. The enclosure measures 24.8 cm high, 14.9 cm wide and 19.1 cm deep.
Engineering and use context
The tweeter is a small compression driver with an aluminium diaphragm rather than a soft dome, and it sits on a Tractrix horn, the flare profile Klipsch uses across its lines, which the company specifies for a uniform 90 by 90 degree dispersion pattern. That wide and even coverage is what lets the speaker go on a shelf, a stand or a wall without a tightly defined listening position. The tweeter suspension is Linear Travel Suspension, the Klipsch design meant to keep distortion low as the diaphragm moves. The woofer cone is IMG, a lightweight material that Klipsch uses throughout the Synergy Black Label series for bass control. The horn loading and efficient drivers are the reason such a small two-way reaches its sensitivity, which Klipsch describes as more output from less energy. The cabinet is ported at the rear. Keyhole slots on the back allow wall mounting for surround duty.
Pairing
With its easy nominal load and modest power handling, the B-100 suits entry-level AV receivers and compact stereo amplifiers. In a 5.1 system the pair can serve as surrounds behind B-200, F-200 or F-300 front speakers with the C-200 in the centre. As a small stereo pair in a 20 m2 room, a Sub-100 or Sub-120 connected to the receiver's subwoofer pre-out covers the bass below the reach of the small woofer.
Alternatives
The Klipsch Synergy Black Label B-200 is the larger bookshelf model of the series, with a 5.25 inch woofer in a 31.8 cm tall cabinet.
