The L100 Classic MkII is a 12-inch (300 mm) three-way bookshelf loudspeaker in JBL's Classic Series, which pairs vintage JBL styling with current acoustic components. Its launch date is given as 11 November 2024, at a price of USD 2,400 per speaker. The name goes back to the original L100 Century of 1970, which cost USD 546, about USD 4,430 in 2024 money against USD 4,800 for a pair of MkII speakers, and stayed in production through the mid-1980s. Against the 2018 L100 Classic, the MkII brings upgraded drivers and a reworked crossover network with split terminals.

Key specs that matter

Nominal impedance is 4 ohms, and sensitivity reaches 90 dB measured with 2.83 V at 1 m. JBL recommends amplifier power of 25 to 200 W RMS. Frequency response is quoted as 40 Hz to 40 kHz at -6 dB. Two crossover points divide the signal at 450 Hz and 3.5 kHz, using second and third order filters respectively. With the grille fitted a cabinet stands 642.9 mm high, 389.9 mm wide and 365.1 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 28.6 kg.

Engineering and use context

Bass comes from the JW300SW-8, a 12-inch cast-frame woofer that combines a pure-pulp cone with a dual spider. The midrange band is covered by the JM125PC-8, a 5.25-inch unit with a polymer-coated pure-pulp cone. Above the upper crossover point the JT025Ti2-4 takes over, a 1-inch (25 mm) titanium dome tweeter mated to an acoustic lens and waveguide and driven by a ferrite magnet. The MDF enclosure uses 25 mm thick front and rear panels and 19 mm sides, finished in natural walnut veneer. Its Quadrex foam grille, held in a wood frame, is offered in black, orange or blue. Attenuators on the front baffle give the midrange and the tweeter independent level settings. Buying the pair together with stands raised the price to USD 5,130.

Pairing

Gold-plated binding posts in two pairs, bridged by jumpers, let the speaker run from one amplifier channel, be bi-wired, or be bi-amped with the woofer and the midrange and tweeter on a second channel pair. A partnering amplifier needs a rating for stable 4 ohm operation. JBL recommends its JS-120 or JS-150 stands for this model, both sold separately, with the JS-120 listed at USD 330.

Alternatives

The JBL L82 Classic MkII is the smaller two-way model of the Classic Series, with an 8-inch woofer and a 1-inch titanium dome tweeter crossing over at 1.7 kHz into an 8 ohm load.
