The SPEKTOR 1 is a compact stand-mount from DALI's SPEKTOR range, the series with which the Danish brand carried its design principles into a lower price bracket. It debuted on 30 January 2017, with production in China, and it no longer appears among current DALI products, only in the archive of retired models. It is an ultra-compact passive two-way box intended for a shelf, a wall or a stand, and the maker positions it next to compact music systems as well as in surround setups for films.

Key specs that matter

The frequency range is 59 Hz to 26,000 Hz within 3 dB. Sensitivity is a low 83 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m, and DALI wants between 40 and 100 watts of amplification for it. Nominal impedance is 6 ohms. A 4.5 inch woofer and a 21 mm soft dome tweeter meet at a single crossover point of 2,100 Hz, and the speaker reaches 103 dB SPL at 1 m. The cabinet is ported. Each cabinet is 237 mm high, 140 mm wide and 195 mm deep and weighs 2.6 kg. Vinyl wraps were offered in white, black ash and walnut.

Engineering and use context

DALI designed the woofer for this model alone, adjusting the angle of the cone and the size of the dust cap to suit the small cabinet and to help integration with the tweeter. The membrane mixes fine-grain paper with wood fibre pulp, a combination that keeps the cone rigid and light while its irregular surface limits unwanted surface resonance. The tweeter dome is a woven fabric that, by DALI's figures, weighs under half as much as most other soft dome tweeters, which lets it handle the lower end of its range near the crossover without breaking up. Driver materials and geometry were also chosen for wide dispersion, so that balance and consistency hold up off-axis as well as directly in front. DALI states that its custom drivers remove the need for frequency correction in the crossover network, which keeps signal loss in the filter close to zero.

Pairing

DALI calls the design amplifier friendly and names almost any stereo amplifier or surround receiver as a suitable match. Given the low sensitivity, an amplifier toward the 100 watt end of the range leaves more headroom than a very small one, and the nominal impedance avoids the need for a 4 ohm capable design. A compact integrated amplifier or streaming amplifier on the same shelf makes a small complete system.

In the same series, the SPEKTOR 2 moves up to a 5.25 inch woofer and 84.5 dB sensitivity.
