The Silver 50 7G is the entry point to Silver 7G, the 2021 generation of Monitor Audio's Silver range, and the smaller of its two bookshelf designs. It is a two-way reflex speaker designed by Monitor Audio in Rayleigh, Essex, with a British list price of GBP 575 per pair. Across its Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze lines the company offered 16 stand-mount and floorstanding models at the time.

Key specs that matter

A 135 mm C-CAM bass-mid driver with Rigid Surface Technology II works with a 25 mm C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter, and the crossover splits the band at 2.6 kHz. Monitor Audio quotes a response of 47 Hz to 35 kHz at -6 dB, a sensitivity of 86 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohm. Recommended amplifier power is 40 to 100 W. Height is 282 mm, width 165 mm and depth 272 mm, with a weight of 5.6 kg per cabinet. Two sets of gold-plated terminals are fitted, allowing bi-wiring or bi-amping.

Engineering and use context

For the high frequencies Monitor Audio uses a revised version of the long-running C-CAM gold dome. In this generation it gains a new ring magnet, improved damping and venting of the rear chamber, and a flush perforated grille with a reworked hexagonal pattern. A compression ring mounted just above the dome is designed to raise output above 10 kHz, compensating for a dip that precedes the first break-up mode of the ceramic-coated alloy dome at about 31 kHz. The dome sits in a waveguide with a short throat intended to shape both on-axis and off-axis output. The RST II cone has a hexagonally dimpled profile to control resonance and strengthen its structure, and its surround was optimised by finite element analysis to limit concentric modes. A bracing bolt runs behind the treble unit, both drivers are secured with bolt-through fixings, and Allen keys come in the box so they can be retightened. On the rear panel a HiVe II reflex port with rifled edging is tuned to 55 Hz. Compared with the sixth generation, driver surrounds are now colour-matched to the cabinet, and the magnetic grilles are rounded only at the bottom edge.
