The Monitor Audio Bronze 50 belongs to the sixth generation of the British maker's Bronze series, launched in August 2020 as the successor to the earlier Bronze 1. Among the 6G Bronze bookshelf pair it is the more compact model, with the Bronze 100 above it. The UK launch price was GBP 260 per pair, and each box includes a magnetic grille.
Key specs that matter
Drivers are a 5.5 inch, or 140 mm, C-CAM bass and midrange unit and a 25 mm gold dome C-CAM tweeter, crossing over at 2.5 kHz. The rated free field response is 62 Hz to 25 kHz, and in a room the response extends from 40 Hz to 30 kHz at minus 6 dB. Sensitivity is 85 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m. Nominal impedance is 8 ohm with a minimum of 4.4 ohm. Power handling is 80 W RMS, the recommended amplifier range is 20 to 80 W, and a pair reaches a maximum of 107 dBA. The cabinet measures 166 mm wide, 281 mm high and 265 mm deep and weighs 5 kg.
Engineering and use context
Monitor Audio uses C-CAM for both drivers, a ceramic-coated alloy combining magnesium with aluminium, gold in colour on the tweeter and silver on the bass cone. The bass driver employs Damped Concentric Mode technology, and the tweeter sits in a UD Waveguide intended for uniform dispersion. The enclosure is built from 15 mm MDF with internal bracing and loaded by a rear HiVe II port, which Monitor Audio tuned so that placement is less critical. Internal cabling is Pureflow silver-plated oxygen-free copper, and gold-plated five-way terminals allow bi-wiring. The cloth grille has a hexagonal pattern designed to let sound pass unhindered. A rear fixing point accepts the FIX-M wall mount. Four vinyl finishes are offered - black, white, Urban Grey and walnut - and the latter two carry a wood grain pattern.
Pairing
Given its minimum impedance and modest sensitivity, the Bronze 50 works best with an integrated amplifier that stays stable into lower impedance loads and sits inside the suggested power band. The split terminals let owners run two cable pairs from one stereo amplifier for the low and high sections, or connect each section to its own amplifier channel, which also allows bi-amping with a second stereo amplifier.
Alternatives
The Monitor Audio Bronze 100 6G is the bigger stand-mount of the 6G Bronze line, with an 8 inch C-CAM bass driver, a 2.2 kHz crossover, 87 dB sensitivity and a 30 to 100 W amplifier recommendation in a 7.8 kg cabinet.
