The Gold 100 6G is a three-way stand-mount speaker from the 6G generation of Monitor Audio's Gold range. Pricing was set at GBP 3,000, USD 4,200 or EUR 3,600 per pair, and it comes in pairs with a five-year warranty and is available with a Macassar veneer or in gloss black or satin white paint, with magnetic grilles supplied.

Key specs that matter

This model divides the audio band between three drive units. An 8 inch (203 mm) bass unit and a 3 inch (76 mm) midrange both use HDT C-CAM cones, and treble comes from an MPD III tweeter. The crossover points sit at 700 Hz between bass and midrange and at 2.6 kHz between midrange and tweeter. The published anechoic response runs from 49 Hz to 60 kHz at -6 dB, with an in-room figure of 32 Hz to 60 kHz on the same basis. Sensitivity is 86.5 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m under free-field conditions, and the nominal impedance is 4 ohm, and the minimum across 20 Hz to 20 kHz falls to 3.9 ohm at 140 Hz. Maximum peak SPL is rated at 119 dB under AES75 with Z-weighting. Height is 447.7 mm, width 230 mm and depth 357.3 mm, and each speaker weighs 14 kg.

Engineering and use context

The pleated MPD III diaphragm has a square radiating surface, intended to give equal response in the vertical and horizontal planes and tuned for wide treble extension. HDT, short for Hexagonal Diaphragm Technology, is a development of the RDT III driver used in the Platinum and Hyphn models, built as a Nomex, aluminium and carbon fibre sandwich stamped with a hexagonal pattern. The company states that this pattern is meant to overcome the break-up behaviour of symmetrical cones. Both cone drivers get extended voice coils, larger motor systems, an optimised spider and improved surrounds. The midrange sits in its own steel enclosure placed behind an aluminium baffle, the drivers use bolt-through fixing, and the crossover is built with high-performance capacitors. Bass loading is handled by a rear-venting HiVe II reflex port tuned to 38 Hz, and port bungs are included. Having a separate midrange means the bass unit only needs to cover the lowest band, while the tweeter takes over the treble.

Pairing

Monitor Audio rates the speaker for 130 to 500 W RMS on a music signal, with 250 W as the standard recommendation. With the impedance minimum falling in the upper bass, an amplifier rated for steady output into low loads is the relevant match. For mounting, the maker lists the ST-2 Universal Stand as compatible with this model.

Alternatives

The Monitor Audio Studio 89 is another bookshelf model from the brand, using an MTM layout with two 4.25 inch RDT III bass-mid drivers around an MPD III tweeter.
