The Silver 100 7G is the bigger of the two stand-mounts offered in Monitor Audio's Silver Series 7G, a range launched in 2021 that also covers the Silver 200, 300 and 500 floorstanders, the C250 centre, the FX surround, the AMS Dolby Atmos speaker and the W-12 subwoofer. Its layout pairs one mid-woofer with one tweeter in a ported cabinet, and it is offered in Black Oak, Walnut, Satin White, Ash and High Gloss Black at a Canadian price of CAD 1,699, with a Limited Edition version in matte green lacquer.
Key specs that matter
In this design the lower band is reproduced by an 8 inch (20 cm) C-CAM driver with Rigid Surface Technology II, and treble from a 25 mm C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter. The crossover hands over at 2.3 kHz. Frequency response is 35 Hz to 35 kHz at -6 dB. Sensitivity is 87.5 dB, nominal impedance is 8 ohm with a minimum of 4.9 ohm, and maximum power handling is 120 W. The reflex port is tuned to 42 Hz. Each cabinet measures 375 x 230 x 332 mm and weighs 9.4 kg.
Engineering and use context
The RST II name describes small indented pits pressed into the aluminium alloy of the cone. They stiffen the diaphragm without adding mass and are meant to stop it from breaking up and distorting. The tweeter sits in a Uniform Dispersion Waveguide II and has a compression ring in front of the dome, which the maker says dampens distortion and raises sensitivity. Behind the dome is a vented rear chamber, and a hexagonal perforated grille protects it. The third-order crossover network joins the two drivers. A rear-mounted reflex opening vents the cabinet, and foam plugs are provided to damp it. Twin pairs of terminals on the rear allow separate cable runs to each crossover section. The Limited Edition variant pairs its green lacquer with a gold-coloured mid-woofer diaphragm, while the drivers and crossover stay the same.
Pairing
Monitor Audio recommends amplifiers from 40 W to the maximum power handling. The nominal rating together with a minimum that stays close to 5 ohm puts the Silver 100 7G within the working range of most integrated amplifiers and AV receivers. The split terminals give owners of two stereo power amplifiers the option of feeding the woofer and tweeter halves of the crossover from different channels.
Alternatives
The Monitor Audio Silver 50 7G is the more compact stand-mount in this Silver generation, built around a 135 mm RST II bass-mid driver in a 282 x 165 x 272 mm cabinet.
