The S 801 PM is an active stereo pair of stand-mount speakers from the Danish brand Jamo, part of its Studio 8 series. It takes the cabinet and drivers of the passive S 801 and adds a built-in 48 W amplifier with its own inputs, which lets the two boxes run as a complete stereo setup without any separate receiver or amplifier. The electronics live in one cabinet, which feeds its passive partner over a speaker cable. The UK launch price was 289 GBP per pair, with black available first and white announced for autumn 2019.
Key specs that matter
Jamo pairs a 25 mm soft dome tweeter mounted in a WaveGuide with an aluminised polyfibre mid and bass driver, crossed over at 1,730 Hz. Jamo gives a frequency response of 76 Hz to 26,000 Hz, a sensitivity of 85 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohm. The amplifier supplies 24 W per channel continuous at under 1 percent THD, for a system total of 48 W, while 96 W is the peak figure. A single cabinet measures 285 x 156 x 163 mm and weighs 2.95 kg.
Engineering and use context
The enclosures are built from MDF, and each box has a rear-firing reflex port that extends the low end, so placing them flush against a wall is best avoided. Connections cover Bluetooth for phones and tablets, an optical digital input for a TV or streamer, a USB port for a laptop or desktop computer and a stereo RCA line input for analogue players such as a CD deck or a record deck followed by an external phono preamplifier. A single knob handles both volume and source selection, and a remote control is included. Jamo also packs a 4 m speaker wire to link the active and passive units, a USB A to B lead and AA batteries for the remote, so the system can be connected and used straight away. The combination of optical and Bluetooth inputs means a television and a phone can both stay connected, with the knob or remote used to switch between them.
Pairing
With amplification on board, the only external parts needed are the sources. The limited bass extension leaves the deepest octaves to other hardware, and Jamo provides a subwoofer output for exactly that purpose, so a powered subwoofer can be added directly. The compact footprint suits a desk, a TV stand or a small shelf in a room of around 20 m2.
Alternatives
Jamo's S 801 is the passive version of the same Studio 8 bookshelf design, sharing the cabinet and driver layout but requiring an external amplifier.
