The RUBICON LCR belonged to DALI's RUBICON series and was built for mounting on a wall, where it could work as the left, centre or right channel of a surround system or as one of a stereo pair. It is now shown as discontinued by the Danish manufacturer, and a pair was listed in Europe at EUR 1,500 in 2023. Its most unusual feature is a hybrid tweeter module that rotates, so the driver layout can be kept correct whether the cabinet hangs upright or lies on its side under a screen.
Key specs that matter
DALI quotes 59 Hz to 34,000 Hz within 3 dB, 89 dB sensitivity at 2.83 V and 1 m, and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms. The highest output is 109 dB SPL at 1 m. It is a 2 + 1/2-way design with crossovers at 3,100 Hz and 14,000 Hz, which feed a 6.5 inch wood fibre woofer, a 29 mm soft dome and a 17 x 45 mm planar tweeter. DALI puts the amplifier range at 20 to 150 watts. The cabinet measures 465 mm high, 278 mm wide and 142 mm deep, and the reflex system is tuned to 49 Hz. The factory finishes were black, white, walnut and maroon, with walnut applied as a real wood veneer.
Engineering and use context
This is a ported cabinet, and the reflex opening is built into the back panel so that the wall behind the speaker acts as an extension of the port. DALI claims enough bass from this arrangement that a subwoofer is not required. In the woofer, the wood fibre cone gives a light and rigid diaphragm whose uneven surface is meant to move like a piston while cutting surface resonance. The driver sits in a cast aluminium chassis shaped for free airflow and its cone edge is a low-loss surround of soft rubber. Its motor uses DALI's patented SMC material in the pole-piece, and a slitted copper cap around that pole-piece concentrates the SMC effect so that distortion falls further. In the hybrid tweeter, the soft dome covers the treble from the lower crossover upward, and the planar ribbon element joins it at the top of the band. Rotating the module is what makes the same model usable as a horizontal centre speaker and as a vertical left or right speaker.
Pairing
Since the nominal load is low, the chosen stereo amplifier or multichannel receiver should be specified for such loads. The low minimum of the recommended power range and the good sensitivity mean that high power is not needed to reach normal listening levels, and three matching units fill a full front row in a home cinema.
Alternatives
The OPTICON LCR MK2 is another DALI on-wall LCR model whose first crossover point sits slightly lower.
