DALI built the OBERON ON-WALL as the wall-hung member of its OBERON series, a line that the Danish maker has since moved to its discontinued list. Where the OBERON 1 and 3 stand on shelves or stands, this model is a slim passive two-way box designed to hang flat against a wall, for use as a front pair in a stereo system or as a surround channel in a home cinema. Only 120 mm deep, it shares its tweeter and cone material with the rest of the family.

Key specs that matter

The published frequency range spans 55 Hz to 26,000 Hz within 3 dB. A 5.25 inch mid-bass unit and a 29 mm soft dome split the band at 2,100 Hz. Sensitivity is 87 dB measured with 2.83 V at 1 m, nominal impedance is 6 ohms and peak output reaches 107 dB SPL at 1 m. DALI lists 25 to 100 watts as the suitable amplifier power. Height is 385 mm and width 245 mm, and one speaker weighs 4.9 kg with its grille fitted. Its reflex tuning sits at 50 Hz, and the vinyl finishes were light oak, dark walnut, white and black ash.

Engineering and use context

A flat cabinet normally leaves little room for a long port, so DALI borrowed a down-firing bass port layout first used in its RUBICON LCR. The recommended distance from the rear wall is 0 to 10 cm, meaning the speaker is meant to sit directly on the wall or very close to it and not further out. The cabinet panels are high density MDF cut on CNC machines and covered in a vinyl wrap. Solid internal bracing crosses the enclosure, and damping material lines the inside. The mid-bass driver uses a wood fibre reinforced cone that DALI describes as stiff yet lightweight, and its magnet includes the brand's patented SMC disc, a Soft Magnetic Compound part aimed at lowering mechanical distortion. At the top, an ultra-lightweight soft dome of woven fabric handles the treble, and DALI calls this unit oversized. Connection is by one pair of terminals for single wiring, and the package holds rubber feet and a manual.

Pairing

An easy nominal load and moderate sensitivity keep demands on the amplifier modest, and the recommended power window fits typical stereo integrated amplifiers and multichannel AV receivers. In a surround layout it can join other OBERON models, including the horizontal OBERON VOKAL that DALI lists for left, centre, right and surround use, since every model in the range uses the same woven fabric tweeter and wood fibre cones.

Alternatives

For an on-wall DALI with a larger woofer, the OPTICON LCR MK2 combines a 6.5 inch driver with a hybrid tweeter that pairs a dome and a planar element.
