The HDI-1600 is the two-way bookshelf loudspeaker of the JBL HDI Series, presented in January 2020 and designed and engineered at JBL's acoustic engineering facility in Northridge, California. The series is built around JBL's patented High-Definition waveguide technology combined with the patented 2410H-2 high-frequency compression driver, and it also includes the HDI-3600 triple 6.5-inch and HDI-3800 triple 8-inch floorstanders. At launch the HDI-1600 was priced at USD 1,800 a pair in the US, GBP 1,499 in the UK and EUR 849 for a single speaker in Europe, while the two floorstanders were listed at EUR 1,799 and EUR 2,299 each.
Key specs that matter
Nominal impedance is 4 ohms and sensitivity is 85 dB measured with 2.83 V at 1 m. JBL recommends amplifier power from 15 W to 200 W. The quoted frequency response spans 40 Hz to 30 kHz at -6 dB. The crossover frequency sits at 1,900 Hz. Each cabinet measures 370 mm high, 230 mm wide and 288.9 mm deep, and one speaker weighs 9.96 kg net.
Engineering and use context
High frequencies are handled by the 2410H-2, a 1-inch (25 mm) compression driver with a lightweight polymer annular Teonex diaphragm, which JBL uses to extend the upper range by cutting moving mass. It is loaded into the patented HDI waveguide. The lower band goes to a 6.5-inch (165 mm) driver with a black Advanced Aluminum Matrix cone, a cast frame and a 1.5-inch voice coil. The enclosure is heavily braced and uses a bass-reflex alignment that vents through dual rear-firing flared ports shaped by computer optimisation. The curved cabinet is finished in automotive-grade painted High Gloss Black or in furniture-grade satin Walnut or Gray Oak wood veneer. A black cloth grille attaches with magnets, keeping the baffle free of visible fasteners.
Pairing
The back panel has dual binding posts that can be bi-wired, so the woofer and compression driver sections can take their own speaker cables or their own amplifier channels. An amplifier that stays stable into a 4 ohm load is the logical match for this nominal impedance. JBL offers optional HDI-FS floor stands for the model, sold separately.
Alternatives
The JBL 4309 Studio Monitor is another two-way bookshelf model that uses the same 2410H-2 compression driver with an HDI horn, here combined with a 6.5-inch cast-frame Pure-pulp cone woofer in a walnut or black walnut cabinet with a blue baffle.
