The Gold 50 6G is the smallest stand-mount of the sixth-generation Gold series from Monitor Audio, announced in August 2024. It was launched at GBP 1,700 per pair in Britain and USD 2,250 in America, and the US site now shows USD 2,749. The Gold 6G range introduced a new HDT cone and uses the MPD III tweeter derived from Monitor Audio's Concept 50 project.

Key specs that matter

A 6-inch (152 mm) HDT C-CAM bass and midrange driver works with an MPD III tweeter, crossed over at 2.5 kHz. The -6 dB response is 55 Hz to 60 kHz free-field and 44 Hz to 60 kHz in-room. Sensitivity is 85 dB, impedance is 4 ohms nominal with a 4.0 ohm minimum at 225 Hz, and Monitor Audio suggests amplifiers of 130 to 300 W. Peak output reaches 114 dB. The rear HiVe II port is tuned to 50 Hz. The cabinet measures 320 x 185 x 303 mm and weighs 8.5 kg. Three finishes are offered, namely Macassar, High-Gloss Black or Satin White, and the warranty covers five years of ownership.

Engineering and use context

HDT is a single-skin C-CAM cone with a hexagonal pattern pressed into its surface, and Monitor Audio says it moves the break-up of the cone about 10% higher than the earlier RST II cone. C-CAM is the company's ceramic-coated aluminium and magnesium alloy. The MPD III tweeter uses a pleated diaphragm, in which a folded film moves air by squeezing the folds together, giving a large diaphragm area in a small space and extending the treble response. It is the third version of this tweeter and first appeared in the Concept 50 prototype. The HiVe II port is rifled internally to speed the air flow, and its tuning sets the bass extension of the small cabinet. The matching ST-2 stand is designed for the Gold 50 6G. Within the Monitor Audio catalogue, the Gold series sits above Silver and below Platinum. The Gold 50 6G is 56 mm shorter than the Bronze 100 yet 0.7 kg heavier.

Pairing

With low sensitivity and a 4 ohm load, the Gold 50 6G needs a capable amplifier. The rear port needs clearance from the wall, and the ST-2 stand brings the tweeter to seated ear height. For deeper bass, a subwoofer can be added, and a room of about 20 m2 suits the size of the cabinet.
