The Platinum 100 3G is the only stand-mount speaker in the third-generation Platinum series, the top conventional range from Monitor Audio. It was announced in 2022 and became available in January 2023 at GBP 4,500, EUR 5,500 or USD 6,000 per pair, and a later US listing shows USD 6,900. It combines a 6-inch RDT III mid-bass driver with the MPD III pleated tweeter.

Key specs that matter

The two drivers, a 6-inch RDT III mid-bass unit and an MPD III tweeter, are divided at 2.85 kHz. At -6 dB, the response extends from 37 Hz to 60 kHz free-field and from 28 Hz to 60 kHz in-room. Sensitivity is 85 dB, impedance is 4 ohms nominal with a 4.0 ohm minimum at 180 Hz, and power handling is 150 W, with 75 to 300 W recommended. The rear port is tuned to 44 Hz. The cabinet measures 398 x 225 x 325.6 mm and weighs 15.2 kg. Finishes are Piano Black, Piano Ebony and Pure Satin White.

Engineering and use context

RDT III, the third version of Monitor Audio's Rigid Diaphragm Technology, is a sandwich cone with a Nomex honeycomb core between skins of aluminium and carbon fibre, which makes it both light and stiff. The MPD III tweeter works with a folded film diaphragm, the design Monitor Audio first used in the Concept 50 prototype. With this crossover point, the tweeter covers the upper midrange and treble. The Platinum 3G cabinets are built from laminated MDF with curved and braced walls between 18 and 21 mm thick and a 36 mm front baffle, which is heavy for a stand-mount of this size and accounts for much of the weight. The mid-bass driver has the same 6-inch size as that of the Gold 50 6G, but the Platinum uses the RDT III sandwich cone instead of the single-skin HDT cone, and the Platinum 100 3G weighs almost 80% more than the Gold model. Above it in the series are the Platinum 200 3G and 300 3G floorstanders.

Pairing

Given its low sensitivity and 4 ohm load, the speaker needs a powerful amplifier. The speaker needs rigid stands for its weight, and the rear port some space from the wall. In a room of about 20 m2, the deep in-room extension makes a subwoofer optional for music, and a Monitor Audio subwoofer can take the LFE channel in a home cinema.
