The F1-5 is the compact standmount in Fyne Audio's F1 range, the top series of the Scottish maker, and it takes the technology of the larger F1-8 and scales it down to a bookshelf-sized cabinet. It is hand-built in the UK, offered only in Piano Gloss Walnut with burr walnut inlays on the front and top panels, and listed by Fyne at GBP 4,299.98 per pair with VAT.
Key specs that matter
A pair of drivers is fed by a single-wired passive network, and the enclosure vents through a port aimed at the floor. A 125 mm IsoFlare driver with a multi-fibre paper cone and FyneFlute surround handles bass and midrange, while a 19 mm compression tweeter with a magnesium diaphragm and neodymium motor sits at its acoustic centre. The filter hands over at 1.9 kHz, with second-order slopes on the woofer side and first-order slopes on the tweeter side. Sensitivity is 87 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m into a nominal 8 ohm load, and the quoted response runs from 48 Hz to 38 kHz at -6 dB, typical in room. Fyne recommends 30 to 100 W and states continuous handling of 50 W RMS with 200 W peak. Each speaker stands 321 mm high, 186 mm wide and 289 mm deep, and weighs 5.7 kg.
Engineering and use context
Because the tweeter fires through the throat of the cone, both drivers radiate from one point and arrive in time, which is the aim of the IsoFlare layout. The enclosure is made from high-density pressed birch plywood with extensive internal bracing, and it rests on a heavily reinforced machined aluminium plinth. That plinth houses the BassTrax system - a twin-cavity arrangement in which the port fires down onto a cone-shaped Tractrix diffuser that spreads low-frequency energy as a 360-degree wavefront, so spacing from the wall behind matters less than it would for a rear-vented box. The crossover is assembled by hand on vibration-damping fibreboard with laminated-core inductors, non-inductive thick-film resistors, Claritycap polypropylene capacitors and Neotech PC-OCC wiring, and after testing every network goes through Deep Cryogenic Treatment, a process developed under Dr Paul Mills.
Pairing
The moderate sensitivity and easy load suit solid-state integrated amplifiers in the recommended power window, and the modest continuous figure argues against driving the pair hard with far more power than the recommended maximum. Stands are not supplied, and Fyne offers its FS8 stands for the model.
Alternatives
Inside the same brand, the Fyne Audio F701SP is a larger standmount built around a 200 mm IsoFlare driver taken from the F1-8.
