The DS1 is a two-way on-wall loudspeaker from Spendor, the British manufacturer based in South Yorkshire, and belongs to the company's D-Line family. It is designed for rooms where freestanding speakers on stands are impractical, and works as a slim stereo pair, as front speakers in a home cinema or as surrounds in systems up to 7.1 and Dolby Atmos layouts. Like all Spendor models, it is designed and built in the UK.

Key specs that matter

The DS1 combines Spendor's 22mm LPZ polyamide dome tweeter with an 18cm EP77 polymer-cone mid/bass driver, crossing over at 3.8kHz, in a sealed cabinet. Typical in-room response is 60Hz to 25kHz, sensitivity is 86dB for 1W at 1m, and nominal impedance is 8 ohms with a 5.8-ohm minimum. Recommended amplification is 25 to 100W, with power handling of 150W unclipped programme. Connection is by a Neutrik speakON socket. Each speaker measures 500mm high, 275mm wide and only 135mm deep, and weighs 8.5kg. Finishes are black oak, walnut, oak, cherry and satin white, with a magnetic grille.

Engineering and use context

The EP77 polymer cone is Spendor's own material, thermo-moulded in-house on custom equipment at its Sheffield-area facility, and the LPZ tweeter is taken from the D-Line range. A sealed enclosure was chosen rather than a port because a speaker mounted flat on a wall has no space behind it for a rear port to breathe, and sealed loading keeps bass behaviour consistent regardless of the exact position on the wall. The cabinet uses Spendor's rigid asymmetric bracing, where braces are placed at uneven intervals so panel sections do not share resonant frequencies, combined with Dynamic Damping to control energy stored in the panels. The dedicated wall-mounting system secures the speaker to a flat surface while decoupling the back of the cabinet from the wall, so vibration is not passed into the building structure where it could re-radiate. The Neutrik speakON connector locks into place and suits the recessed rear of a wall speaker, where conventional binding posts would be hard to reach. Its shallow depth lets the DS1 sit close to a wall beside a flat-screen TV.

Pairing

The benign impedance is easy for any amplifier or AV receiver within Spendor's recommended range, though the moderate sensitivity favours amplifiers toward the upper end in larger rooms. Because the sealed cabinet rolls off gradually in the low bass, a subwoofer completes the system in stereo and home cinema use, with a crossover around 80Hz.
