The A1.2 is the compact shelf mount member of the Spendor A-Line, made by the British loudspeaker company now based at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Catcliffe, Rotherham. It is the mark 2 version of the A1 and the most accessible model in the second-generation range, which also includes the floorstanding A2.2, A4.2 and A7.2, the AC1 and AC2 centre speakers and the AW1 on-wall model. Spendor dates the A1.2 data sheet February 2025 and notes that design and production both take place in Britain.

Key specs that matter

The A1.2 uses a sealed two-way layout. A 15 cm bass/mid unit with a cone of Spendor's own EP77 polymer works with a 22 mm polyamide dome tweeter, and the handover between them sits at 4.2 kHz. In-room response is given as 60 Hz to 26 kHz. Sensitivity is 83 dB for 1 watt at 1 metre, nominal impedance is 8 ohm with a minimum of 6.4 ohm, and power handling is 100 watts of unclipped programme. The cabinet measures 308 mm high, 165 mm wide and 186 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 4.8 kg. Cables attach to one recessed pair of binding posts, a magnetic grille is supplied, and buyers choose between satin white, walnut, oak and black oak.

Engineering and use context

Set against the original A1, which Spendor rated at 55 Hz to 25 kHz and 84 dB with a 6.6 ohm minimum, the mark 2 trades a few hertz of low-end reach for a wider top octave. The external size stays the same. The new version adds a refined internal bracing system that Spendor says cuts unwanted vibration, reduces cabinet interaction and time smearing and lowers the noise floor. Across the whole mark 2 range the company lists upgraded driver and cabinet damping and calibration to a broadcast reference standard, so each pair is matched. Because the box is closed rather than ported, bass output does not rely on air moving through a vent, and Spendor states the A1.2 stays tuneful when placed near a wall or used in a small room. The shallow depth allows use on a shelf or on a suitable stand.

Pairing

Spendor asks for an amplifier of 25 to 100 watts. With a sensitivity figure shared only by the A2.2 as the lowest in the range, and an impedance curve that never falls far below its nominal value, the A1.2 suits a solid-state integrated amplifier with some reserve of power rather than a very low-output valve design, while the benign load makes it simple for most compact amplifiers and streaming amplifiers to drive. In a home cinema layout it can be combined with the AC1 centre and the AW1, which use the same driver sizes.

Alternatives

The Spendor Classic 4/5 is the brand's other compact sealed shelf mount two-way, with a cabinet finished in real wood veneer.
